I wanted to tag I, sb, d, and sd for english. I haven't submitted the tags yet but I recently found out sd has a second language requirement. Where you have to take a class involving literature in a different language.

Do any of the other uc's have this type of requirement? I know la has some foreign language requirements, but it's only learning another language--not necessarily taking a class with literature in a language other than english.

Btw I'm also applying to la as an american culture and literature major which is similar to english.

Thanks!

At my CC, I took a class called “Early World Literature”, and that counts as taking a literature in translation class for most of the UCs. From what I can tell, they don’t actually expect you to take a literature class in another language. In my class, we just read stuff that had been translated, and, according to assist, it fulfills that requirement for both UCLA and UCSD. Of course, I could be totally wrong, but I think you’ll be okay if you just take a world lit class or something similar.

And I’m applying to LA as an American Culture and Lit major too! Good luck! :)

English major here. Foreign literature in translation typically encompasses humanities courses such as Mythology, Classics, 17th century philosophy, etc. “Translation” mostly refers to the authors composing their works in languages other than English. Good luck!

Thanks guys. But actually, I was talking about the upper division requirements. UCSD makes you take a lit class in another language, which sucks. I think the others don’t, though. I checked but I was scared I might’ve overlooked something lol

But thanks anyway guys! And good luck berkeleywannabe :D!
