Prompt #2
Tell us about a personal quality, talent, accomplishment, contribution or experence that is important to you. What about this quality or accomplishment makes you proud and how does it relate to the person you are?

All my life, I have always looked older than my age. I started school a year earlier than most kindergartners; I was three years old. Even though I was always the youngest in the class, I was between kids that were older than me, and as a result, I acted older than my actual age. When it came time for high school, I decided that I want to home school. I enrolled in my citys Independent Study program, where I would only meet with my instructor once a week to turn in my work and take a test. I did not think that homeschooling was going to make a difference in my outlook on everything, but it did, and I will be coming out with one of the best and most successful experiences I ever had.
Working on my own at home at first was hard. I did know that homeschooling depended a lot on the ability to work independently. In elementary and middle school, I was very dependent on teachers and classmates for help. However, homeschooling allowed me to develop skills that I never knew I had before. Because the system was based on meeting the weekly deadlines, I was able to exercise responsibility and self-determination to get my work done on time. I learned to manage time wisely and create work schedules. Working away from other kids made me appreciate my personal skills and abilities, and clearly set my goals for the future without any peer influence. If I needed any help in something, or had trouble understanding a subject, I would depend on myself to read through books or research the internet until I can find an answer or solution. I refused to ask for help from my parents or instructor because I felt that it is solely my responsibility to learn. Working alone, I was able to develop independent skills that I needed to succeed in the program. My homeschooling experience also benefited me in other ways. Because I have the freedom to work at my own pace, I was able to get my credits done faster. Right now, I am technically still a junior, but I am applying to college because I am graduating a year early. I probably would not have been able to be this lucky if it wasnt for this program. I will be graduating as a more mature and dedicated student, and I have learned to have confidence in the unique personality that I have. I came out with skills that I didnt have when I started, and most of these skills will be beneficial to me in college, and later on, in life itself. I believe that homeschooling is an excellent way to prepare ones self for college, and I am proud to say that I was able to get such a valuable experience.
