I have heard that the University of California does not provide need-based financial aid for international students. I really want to apply to Berkeley but its cost of attendance discourages me. It is more than $50,000, and my family income is around $20,000. So what are the possibilities for internationals to pay the bills at Berkeley? Are there scholarships or other programs?

Not really. Int’ls at UCs generally pay full freight.

You’re better off applying to schools that do give aid to int’ls.

That’s what I hear everywhere - University of California doesn’t provide financial aid for internationals. However, I wasn’t sure whether this actually reflects the reality or was simply what people like to say. After all, it is a top university and officers there must be realizing how many international students they are missing because of that policy - could they be that indifferent?

Eternal, the UCs are not being “indifferent”. They have PLENTY of international students who apply and are willing to pay the cost of attendance to attend.

The school is cheaper for instate students than for out of state and out of country because state residents support the school through the payment of income taxes. It is not that they are charging you more - they are charging the instate people less. For a good reason.

It is not “what people like to say”. Read their website.

Eternal…

The purpose of UC Berkeley, UCLA, and the rest of the UC’s is to educate Calif students. The Calif taxpayers help fund the UCs for this purpose.

The UC’s don’t exist to educate the world.
