I didn’t know you could do that! I think I read on this site somewhere that if you accumulate too many units you’re considered a transfer student. That’s great to know!
From our high school, all of the students who complete the associates degree still apply as first time freshmen. I’ve never heard of anyone applying as a transfer student with dual enrollment.
As long as the college courses are taken during HS, the student can apply as a First time Freshman. Just remember that if they are not taken at a California CC or University, they may not all be UC transferable.
You seem to know about this so I’ll ask: Does their dual enrollment GPA get merged with their school GPA? For example my daughter’s unweighted in 3.93 (putting her in the 25% for UCB and UCLA) , but her community college GPA is 4.0. Will the CC GPA bring up her unweighted GPA? TIA!
What is the difference between apply as freshmen vs transfer. Is there any benefit ?
I have a friend who kid going to CC starting 11 grade. (next year)
And another one saying that shouldn’t be done since it limited the ‘social life’ for her kid.
Thanks!
She’s at the great CC! And we’re using the IGETC to pick classes. Thank you!
This is good to know. I was sort of worried about passing 30 units. haha!
The colleges will calculate the high school and college classes together to formulate gpa. The college classes will have an honors bump
Best news ever! lol! She needed that bump. Thank you!
Use the Roger hub calculator to figure out her gpa.
Oh well, it just brought her unweighted up to 3.94, UC Capped/Weighted did drop from 4.28 to 4.24. Not too terrible.
If a student attends a California CC while in HS, they are considered still a First time Freshman for the CSU’s and UC’s. If a student takes any college courses during the regular school year(Fall/Winter/Spring) after HS graduation, they are considered a Transfer by the CSU’s and UC’s.
The benefit of attending a CC:
-
Lower costs for the 1st 2 years since the CSU’s and UC’s take Junior level transfers (60 semester/90 quarter units) minimum. General Education and major prerequisite courses can be completed at a significant cost savings.
-
The UC’s and CSU’s have guaranteed admission programs for CC to CSU/UC transfers. The CSU’s offer ADT program although not to a specific CSU campus. CCC-Associate Degree for Transfer | CSU
-
UC’s offer the TAG program with guaranteed admission to a specific UC campus and major if the course and GPA requirements are met. Several campuses and majors are excluded from the TAG program. University of California Counselors

Yes, a transfers social life will be different since they are starting 2 years or more later at a University but with over 40,000 Transfer applicants for the UC’s and around 109,000 Transfer applicants for the CSU’s, there is plenty of students that are in the same situation. These schools offer plenty of housing/social opportunities to integrate the Transfers into a 4 year university setting.
Generally (including for UCs and CSUs), it is college courses taken after leaving high school that will cause colleges to see the student as a transfer student rather than a frosh student for application and admission purposes.
