I've read somewhere on here that my UC GPA cannot be higher than my weighted GPA. Is that true? My weighted GPA (high school 9-11) is 3.69. My UC GPA (10-11 a-g courses) is 4.17. Does that mean my UC GPA is also 3.69? =(

UC GPA does not count + or -, only uses the letter grade as 0,1,2,3, or 4. Only a max of 8 points can be added for any honors/AP courses taken. UC GPA does not include courses that are not part of the a-g categories - things like PE and religion classes are not included.

I suppose that someone who got exclusively A- grades in high school with 8 semesters of Ap/honors classes, plus got Cs in several UC ineligible (non a-g) classes and in all the 9th grade classes could have a weighted HS GPA that is lower than the UC GPA as the UC gpa would start out at 4.0 and then be increased for the additional 8 ap/honors points. Yes, it is mathematically possible.

However, it may be that you are not calculating your UC GPA correctly - that is much more common when you think the UC GPA is higher than your high school value.

I think you misunderstood my question. I’m not asking about whether it’s mathematically possible. I’ll rephrase my question:

If my 9-11 high school weighted GPA (3.69) is lower than my 10-11 a-g GPA (4.17), will UC calculate my UC GPA as 3.69 even though m 10-11 a-g GPA is higher? I assume no, but the following thread (post 2) worried me:

http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/954558-ucla-ucb-chances.html

Note: that is not my thread.

Seems extraordinarily unlikely.

The UC GPA is a formula for calculation - much of which I mentioned. it does not have any connection to your high school GPA. No such adjustment - definitely not for the UC GPA that is used on the UC wide application. Whether the two holistic schools - UCLA and Cal - have some rule for readers that causes them to use the lower of the two GPAs is not known, but as the poster above said, it is extraordinarily unlikely. What possible purpose would it serve to roll in grades from 9th grade, from nonacademic subjects and from whatever nonuniform method each high school uses to calculate GPAs?

You just enter letter grades for all qualifying 10th and 11th grade classes. The system will calculate the UC GPA and that has nothing to do with high school cumulative GPA.
