UC Irvine for business

sorry for posting this, but I couldn't find any old thread that caters to my question.
So with UC application out, I filled out business as major for irvine. doing some research, I found out that there is something called The Paul Merage School of Business at irvine. Is this the program I go into if I get accepted as a freshman of 2011? or is this different? People compared this to haas because they are both exclusive. But paul merage is undergrad, and haas is grad. Am i getting my facts mixed up or what?

also, for uc riverside, the business major is closed and you can't fill that in. does anyone know why?

Haas also has an undergraduate program however you must apply to the program after completing a series of courses while a student at Berkeley

The Irvine program admits you from the initial college application process

If you apply as a Business Administration major and get accepted, the school that you will be in is the Paul Merage School of Business. (I’m currently a student in paul merage).

If you apply as a Business Econ major, you are not in the Merage, because business econ will go under social science major, not business.

If you get accepted as a Business Administration major at the Merage school, the “program” you will be accepted into is an undergraduate BA. This program does not straight lead into any MBA programs or whatever.
This particular major is “impacted” or “restricted” because there are limited spaces, so admission into the major is competitive and selective.

As for the UCR business major, I don’t really have any idea, but I think it might have to due with space issues and availability? Not sure…

Keep in mind the Paul Merage School of Business is just like any other “school” such as the School of Biological Sciences or the Henry Samueli School of Engineering. Each “school” is a subsection of the university which has it’s own administrative department. Under each “school,” there are departments like the Department of Chemistry of the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science.

Recently, Paul Merage School of Business opened up an undergraduate program for a bachelors in a few topics of business. Before, it was strictly catered to graduate students (MBA progrmas) only with some undergraduates taking courses in the Merage School for a minor. Now, the school’s administration is taking undergraduates in as students of the school.

This really depends on what you want type of business you desire to go into. The most valuable degree from merage would be bus admin/accounting in my opinion as there is a cross over to a fair number of other fields in business. That said, accounting isn’t for everyone. If your interest is finance, just about any highly quantitative major will do(econ, math, math/econ, engineering, physics, cs, etc.) just make sure you do things which show you’re actually interested in finance such as joining the Undergraduate Finance Associate(or Undergraduate Business Association) and becoming an active member.

sincerely,
a quantitative economics major
