UC Merced vs. Cal Poly Pomona

Which one would be better for mechanical engineering? I live in Los Banos and would probably commute to UCM. Would living in Cal Poly Pomona offer a better college experience?

No question about it. Go to Cal Poly Pomona.

I think it depends

Do you want smaller classes? Do you want to attend a larger or smaller school?

Agreed! Cal Poly Pomona will be a far better choice. Get hands on experience and graduate with a job. This is one of the easiest postings to post a comment to. No question about it CPP is the way to go. Did yo know that the Jet Propulsion Laboratory recruits from CPP every year? So does So Cal Edison and a host of other great firms. Can UC, Merced even come close?

No disrespect to UC Merced, but Cal Poly Pomona offers stronger academic reputation at half the price. Particularly in it’s highly ranked (8th according to U.S. News) mechanical engineering department. This department just ranks below two heavy-weight privates (Harvey Mudd at 5th, Cooper Union at 6th) and one highly-selective public service academy (US Naval Academy at Annapolis at 7th). UC Merced is too young and isolated to compete with Cal Poly Pomona in engineering despite being a University of California campus.

what about bioengineering at UCM and biotech at cal poly pomona?

It all depends on what you want to do, the CSU system was made to educate students in practical knowledge (ie. prepares you to get a job), the UC system was made for research (ie. if you want to go on to a Masters, MD, PHD, etc).

So if you want small research opportunities, and small class sizes then consider merced, as research and professor interaction will greatly benefit your graduate application. However, the downside is that merced is still developing, and thus doesn’t really have a night life. But as always, college is what you make of it and you could be great or miserable at merced.

Consider cal poly pomona if you want a good education, that teaches applicational and practical knowledge. You really don’t need research opportunities, or intimate professor interaction, as Pomona primarily prepares you to go out into the real world and get a job.

I decided to go to Cal Poly Pomona. Thank you all.
