I don't know which one to choose, can any one help me. My major is Computer Science AND Engineering, and it is only offered at UC Merced, UCR only offers Computer Science OR Computer Engineering (i prefer to be in CS and Eng). But UC Merced is a really small school, and i think it might be like doing high school all over again(because so few people attend and isn't it surrounded by farms and cows, and there really isn't that big of a college town, it more rural), but then again UC Merced could become one of the great UC's in 15 years. And how good is UC Merced in Computer Science And engineering, (They are not accredited yet either though). And does UCR have a good computer science department, whose is better? So my main question is should i choose UCR or UC Merced (considering my major for both). Thanks

Welcome to the forums! No need to post the exact post in three different locations. The regular UC people will see your thread.

UCR definitely is a more established school and is ranked in the top 100 universities nationally. UCM is definitely still in its early stages and as you mentioned, is not yet established. Perhaps 15 years from now, sure, but you are going to college now and probably should take that into consideration.

Visit both colleges and decide for yourself.

Wow, I am in a similar situation. I have UOP, Stony Brook, UCR, UCM, and I have appealed to top UCs. But I decided that nothing beats the UC system! Okay, have you visited both schools yet? Because I was amazed when I visited them that they are both such opposites from the stereotypes. UCR is gorgeous! And UCM is new, advanced, clean (yay!), and has great profs. Actually I met a prof for Cognitive Sci. and she has taught at CAL, and many of the profs have studied from Stanford. So, I think, for me that has really confused me. Because, like you said, UCM has POTENTIAL. BUT, it's new. UCR is great, b/c the student body is probably more ambitious. I spoke the profs at a reception, and she said that the students at UCM are hard workers. Sure, it is not like Cal students at first, however give them a year or two, and they are just as good. And, I think an advantage of UCM that UCR may not allow is the possibility of transferring.

I think its hard to tell which one is truly the best, and I definitely need more input to make the decision.

Btw, if you need more info on either of these schools, I'd be glad to let you know! =)

WOW dude I was in the same position but I choose UCM! Have you seen both campuses?

Yes, i have seen both campus, there both nice (i took the tour). UC Merced has a really high tech campus, but it is only three buildings and their brand new. And UCR has a nice campus too, i like there pentland dorms and they have a tower which is nice. I am leaning to UC Merced, but i just want to be sure before i SIR.

Hay! I liked the Pentland dorms also! They were really nice! Pentland dorms gives you a little refrigerator and UCM doesn't=(. UCR cleans ur bathroom UCM doesn't=(. Those are the only things that I found wrong with UCM. But, if they had those things then it would cost more to live there, right? UCR is really nice and yes it does have tower with i think 5162 holes but does UCR have a low student teacher ratio? Nope! This is the best quality of UCM. If you actually aren't strong in an area then you could receive extra help. At UCR you can't do that. I became a Bobcat last night(I sent in my SIR). Don't be afraid and don't forget UCM is a UC.

ahh yes, the old' "student to teacher" ratio. they like telling the young ones' that. haha. One of my classes has 6 other kids in it...pretty awesome

Yes! Positivity! Golden Bobcats! Hey if it's true about the "student to teacher" ratio then why are you going to UCSD? Wouldn't it be smart to take advantage? Or is there something horrible about UCM that no one is telling me? lol
