UC Personal Statement for Philosophy Majors!

I am currently in community college and am looking to transfer to a UC in fall 2011. I am a philosophy major. I need some help with prompt 1..It asks for any experience I have had in the field (like internships, employment, volunteer work). But there really isnt any internships, volunteer work, etc...in philosophy! the closest to that would probably be a philosophy club at school. what should i say? The best I could think of is that I apply philosophy when i Coach (I am a volunteer youth basketball coach). Because all coaches in any sport should have a philosophy on how they coach. Is that a good thing to use? any help would be appreciated!! especially from other philosophy majors! thanks! =)

You are in a pickle! Just tell them what you told us but use examples. They know that there aren’t any “philosophy internships.”

You don’t necessarily need to state a specific activity that you’ve done to tie in Philosophy. If you do, that’s great too. What you can do is describe how Philosophy (or whatever theories or ideas fall under the field) has influenced how you view things…or maybe you can tie in a moment or a time when you knew philosophy was the major for you.

the reps really just want to know that you have an idea of what youre getting yourself into.
