Thinking of switching my major from Psychology to Philosophy. I apply this fall, so I still have some time to decide, but I’m torn. I know that I’m more interested in philosophy than I am in psychology, but I’m afraid of regretting the decision to switch (if I do) because I do still love psych, just not as much as philosophy. So I’m curious as to what made you guys decide to go with philosophy as your major?
@alexismariah I loved it. It was either Philosophy or English Literature. I decided that I can just read novels in my spare time and get a lot out of it, so there wasn’t much need to study English. Philosophy is best learned in an academic setting - so there’s that.
Also, I felt Philosophy would challenge me more, and introduce me to new ideas and ways of thinking. Studying philosophy has definitely improved my critical thinking skills and reasoning abilities. That being said, I was initially more attracted to the grand ideas philosophers presented, and wasn’t too interested in the deep complexities that underlie such positions. So my initial impressions of the subject were very different from what philosophy is actually like. I still love it, though.
@goldencub “I felt Philosophy would challenge me more, and introduce me to new ideas and ways of thinking. Studying philosophy has definitely improved my critical thinking skills and reasoning abilities.” This is why I’ve loved philosophy so far. I’ve only taken two classes, but it’s almost as if I can’t see myself majoring in anything else now. At this point, I either want to double major in psych and philo, or major in philosophy and minor in psych.
I know that I want to go to grad school, but with regards to what kind of career I want to pursue, I’m not entirely sure. Initially, I wanted to be a therapist and do research in psych, and possibly become a professor someday. This still sounds very appealing to me, but I know that I really want to major in philosophy instead, which is kind of why I’m stuck.
Hey guys! I haven’t been on CC in a long time but congrats to all the schools you got into! I’m happy to say I got accepted into UCLA with a 3.41 at the time I applied (3.58 now :p).
