I am extremely motivated to study premedical, but my high school statistics were very mediocre ( 3.5 gpa 1800 sat ). Therfore I probably will only be able to get into UC Riverside. I am just wondering what the new medical school at UC Riverside is going to be like. Will it be more technologically advanced and also have the newest medical advancements. Thanks.

You get in ( I got in with a 3.3 act 21 sat 1260)

go to
medschool.ucr.edu for info im pre law so idk

wait…Jason2009, aren’t you class of '09?

um yeah for hs

Any one knows how thomas haider program at ucr medical school is going to work? What is the process to apply. Do you apply when you are a ucr junior or after finishing BCPM pre med courses and MCAT? I guess ucr med school interviews to give you a spot in 24 right? When ucr medical schools says it sets aside 24 seats is it all from this thomas haider program students it is taking in? What about ucr students who are not in thomas haider program? Do they get any preference in ucr med school admissions? If they seek to admit only/mainly socially and economically disadvantaged students from inland empire. If so it might be extremely hard for other ucr students right? You might as well go to uci, ucsd, ucla , ucb right where the competiotion is severe anyways. Atleast it is a level plain field right?

The Thomas Haider program is now saving spots for its own medical school. The program gives special privileges to ALL UCR alumni for consideration into its medical school. When applying through AMCAS, all alumni get this special privilege. They seek a very diverse bunch of students who want to serve the Inland Empire. More can be found on the med school website. Having a socially/economically disadvantaged background is definitely not a necessity.

The program is an AMAZING opportunity. I don’t think any other UC gives this great of an opportunity to its students.

How does this program work? I know a student has to finish minimum 6 semesters in UCR. What are the other stats to be aware of to get guaranteed admission to medical school? Do you know the average GPA for students got in?

The minimum is 6 semesters is aimed towards transfer students. The program effectively saves up to 25 spots for UCR students exclusively. This means that for 25 spots, you will only be competing against current and past UCR students (which is a much smaller pool than otherwise). The average GPA is around a 3.7 for a class of 50, but I expect it to go up.

@ahuynh91 You are the only one who is talking about this program. Can you share some details of selection process? Is there a form available on the UCR site? This program serves the purpose of creating doctor’s in the Inland Empire area but how that translates into selection process is not clear. I called the school but they did not say there is any specific criteria. So I am not sure if it is still based on comprehensive evaluation based on merit or something else is also considered.

If they look at only people from Inland Empire area, then it does not make sense for people from other areas to sacrifice good in other UCs to go to this UC solely for this particular program.
