ucr to ucla med school

anyone currently choosing ucr for this reason? i think i will defer ucsb to go to ucr for this but i dont know.. any advice?

if you're talking about the tomas haider program. It is pretty much gone now that UCR is opening up its own medical school soon.

I disagree, UCR is still connected to UCLA for medical

UCR med center won't open for a long time yet.

imprettydumb, yeah I'm choosing it for the Thomas Haider Program. I don't think it's gone yet because admissions told me that it still exists. At this point, I'm choosing UCR over UCB because of the program.

yeah the same here.. i called them to ask about it and they said its still good and everything. its such a great opportunity but i was afraid of choosing ucr over ucsb.. i loved the feel of ucsb but the program.. i just cant pass this up

You guys should know this program is HIGHLY competitive

like people stressing themselves over GPA and course-load competitive!

just called today. the program is only applicable to future mds.
i thought it was involving a lot more.. pharmaceuticals is what i want to go into and its not for that.. i guess my hopes were too high.. :/
ucsb has a pharmaceuticals undergrad major though! :]

wait, did you find out if the program was going to be gone once UCR starts its med school?

Because I'm going to college in 2010 and I might actually consider UCR for the program.

UCR is strcitly med program with UCLA

hey impretydumb

do u really wanna do pharmaceutical?

I've seen pharmaceutical kids who major and end up doing med school cause they get bored.

I called Haider and they said it still existed. Unlike previous years, however, they're not sending out a preentrance form to high school seniors. You just apply as a UCR junior. I don't know if my parents will let me do it anymore ):
haikumarukuchan: I've pretty much been accepted to Berkeley (they invited me for the Regents Scholarship), so I'm willing to take the risk that it's really competitive. Bring it on, UCR! (:

As long as the program exists into 2014, I'll actually be considering this school.

Same. (except 2013 for me). I don't know the integrity of the program though: would they suddenly close it down on us? It's kind of a small department.

Who knows, california is severely in debt, so I wouldn't put so much confidence in it. It might actually stay alive if funding for UCR's own medical school is pushed back later than the original 2012 opening.

UCR is still a decent school for pre-med.

Yeah, but I'd be really bummed if I passed on an undergrad education @ UCBerkeley or, say, USC (if they give me a really nice scholarship :P) because UCs don't tend to give out too much financial aid, and then have the program close down on me. -__- I'd want to die or something. Hopefully the notification would come early enough that I would be able to transfer?

haikumarukuchan: well im choosing it really because i read the demand is going up something like 22-27% a year for pharmacists.. and in this economy thats great.. also its a lot shorter getting your degree than doing md..
but well see, ill probably change my mind in college. before i found out about thomas haider i wanted to be a english teacher lol

yeah, pharmacy has a great future. By the time you finish pharm school, all the middle-aged people now (45-55) will be 60+ and will be in need for prescription drugs, therefore, demand will explode.

exactly. disregard the boring side of the job, the demand and $$$ issss aallllll what its about. too bad no pharmaceuticals major at ucr. still will try at ucsd pharm school.. really good.

Yeah, I have a friend whose parents both work at different pharmacy places and they both earn $150,000 a year. And they are in their mid 40's, so they still have 10+ of work.

So anyone think the Thomas Haider Program will last into 2014 or so?

Has anybody here considered UCR's Bioengineering program as an option for Medical School, I think that's another great way for you to goto UCLA's medical school. I was told someone has done that and got into UCLA with no problem. They even waived MCAT.
