Personally, I wouldn't care either way. If I didn't go to Merced, I'd probably be at Riverside or a CC, which, currently, aren't any better than UCM anyway.

However, if UCM closed, the Central Valley wouldn't have any UC to represent it. Additionally, it takes time to develop a reputation and an organized system of research on any campus. You can't really fault UC Merced if it isn't exactly a powerhouse is research yet.

Yeah who cares about UC Merced anyway… It’s kind of a trash school not deserving the kind of funds UC’s get. I assume they wouldn’t immediately close the UC but rather just stop further admission.

^Typical Cal Poly-SLO elitist and pompous jerk. I got into SLO for Materials Engineering but chose Cal Poly Pomona because they actually do have my major: Chemical Engineering. I don’t understand why so many people are in an idiotic awe over the CSU in San Luis Obispo?

Looking back on this, we can probably argue that the UCSD professors see UCM as a money sink, and that the funds allocated to UCM would be better spent at UCSD. Human never greed ceases to amaze me.

The research done at UCM is of scientific importance. There are several labs studying stem cells and regenerative medicine, as well as many other important research projects. Closing down the UC would mean a failure, and would be a disservice to the people of the Central Valley, who until UC Merced opened, had no UC to call their own.

Nobel Laureates, award winning professors, MacArthur Geniuses, award winning research, new medical school, new facilities, and a model school for green engineering.

The fact that UCSD professors are so short-sighted and can’t see the long-term benefit of UC Merced makes me wonder if money is spent wisely there? Maybe new hires of faculty there are in order and perhaps a more tolerant environment considering more hate crime has been on UCSD’s campus in the past 2 months then it has ever been in the 4 years I’ve been at UC Merced, because as r31 pointed out, we have: “Nobel Laureates, award winning professors, MacArthur Geniuses, award winning research, new medical school, new facilities, and a model school for green engineering.” and had the first lady of the United States speak at commencement. What did UCSD do in its first 5 year’s of existence? Hmm…
