ACT:34
EC: Best fencer in conference, debate, competitive trivia, charity, international deca, model UN, captian of fencing and leader of deca and am going to senior teach a class or tutor.
I’m aiming for UC SD
Regardless of how your grades look, your EC’s look fairly strong for a UCSD applicant. Your ACT is very strong for that particular school. I’d say it comes down to your essay. If you wrote strongly and personally I think you have a good chance at UCSD.
thanks
UC GPA? http://rogerhub.com/gpa-calculator-uc/
Not to be Debbie Downer, your GPA is a big part of your application so it will hurt your chances. EC’s and test scores are great. Is their an explanation for the low GPA? If so, you will have a better chance than my prediction of a Low Reach.
Good Luck and prove me wrong.
I took really hard classes. 15 honors and APs by senior year. I took the hardest classes that my school had but did not do the best.
I agree with @gumbymom - UCSD is going to be a reach for you. Apply and put your heart and soul into your essay but, your capped UC GPA (probably in the 3.5 range) is probably going to keep you out. As you can see from the attached, just 2% of applicants with a < 3.5 were admitted.

There are lots of very good schools you’ll qualify for - Probably UCR, SDSU and LMU to name 3 in SoCal.
Good luck.
Would colleges rather see a higher GPA with easier classes or someone like me who is taking much harder classes(I’m 2 years ahead in math for example) but has a lower GPA?
If you look at the common datasets for the UC’s, course rigor is considered very important. Taking harder classes is a definite advantage, but you need to also do well in these classes (A’s and B’s)…
Really sorry, but UCSD would rather see someone taking much harder classes AND doing well, thus getting a high GPA. However, I believe whichever school you end up at will be the one for you! I’d advise you to broaden your options. Good luck! ![]()
Please chance me for Cal Poly SLO:

I realize not doing stellar in the classes ruins the benefit, but is it a disadvantage? If two students applied, solely based on classes and gpa, would they prefer a mostly regular class student with a higher gpa or one who took classes which were significantly harder but also had a worse gpa?
My son’s GC told them a story about best friends that both wanted to apply to UCSB. 1 applicant took AP classes, did well, but did not have a 4.0 GPA (around 3.8?). Other applicant took regular classes and achieved a perfect 4.0. Who got in, the applicant with the more challenging cirriculum and the lower GPA. Schools want to see you challenge yourself.
thank you
