Which UC do you think would accept me?

Hi everyone, I'm a senior who really, really wanted to go to either UCSD or UCSB, but looking at my transcript - the chances are really slim...so I wanted to ask if any UCs are realistic with my stats (TRYING TO GET INTO AN ENGLISH MAJOR or BEHAVIORAL SCIENCES)

GPA(weighted 10-12): 3.00
GPA(unweighted 10-12): 2.68
SAT: 1920
CR: 560
MATH: 670
W: 690
and I'm taking my subjects this november
i'm also planning to take the SAT again this october for a 2100

my ECs are:

i've been doing TRACK for four years, again this is my fourth year
i've been doing KEY CLUB for four years (i've been on the board for three years [secretary, VP, VP again this year]
i've been doing VOLUNTEER at my local library on and off, but I've been getting 50 hours a year
i've also been doing competition for PIANO for my whole life. started playing competitively since 7th grade. finished level 10 for certificate of merit and won 3rd/4th places in competitions

i think that's about it for my stats, but please give me an honest answer. I know I've done so poorly in my freshman/junior year but some things happened with myself that revolved around people and I was going to explain the situation in my essay. thank you so much guys!

Are you a low income applicant?

I have a family of 8 depending on my parents work (a restaurant) so I believe so? I may be wrong. Is that going to affect my application process?

The SAT is good for UCSB, but a little low for UCSD. Also, the UCs care more about GPA than standardized tests, so UCSB is a low reach/reach and UCSD is a high reach.

Have you calculated your Weighted UC GPA,? see link: <a href=“Cal State Apply | CSU”>Cal State Apply | CSU;
Your GPA is very low for the UC’s but you might have a chance at UCM and UCR. A possible outside chance with UCSC. If you are in-state, you should consider some of the Cal States such as San Marcos, Dominguez Hills, Channel Islands, Stanislaus, East Bay, San Francisco where you would be a better match. If you are set on attending a UC, go to a Community College for 2 years and get a great GPA and transfer. You can TAG to UCSB.’
Good Luck.

It comes out as a 2.92, using the calculator @Gumbymom I’ve also been looking into UCSC and I’d say it’s one of my top choices for schools. Though, the 2013 Acceptance rate is 48.6%. Thank you for the input and I’ll definitely consider the Cal States as well!

What class is Ath F Track A?

Is this like a PE class but you run track?

No, it’s not a PE class just track. Track is second semester for my school, so it showed up like that! @university89

Make sure to include some safeties!!! From where your standing, there is little chance (unless admitted by exception) you will get into either schools. your GPA is the main one hurting you. Try UCR or UCM as you will atleast have a decent chance of admittance to those universities. Good luck!

I’m applying to as many Cal States as I can as my safeties (UOP, APU, SFSU) but I’m definitely shooting for UCR/UCM! Thank you for your thoughts and wishes! Do you think I could get into UCSC? @IBGuy101

I am not saying it is not impossible but it would be a high match for you… again, if you have some kind of story to tell, write it in the personal statement, remember, they are humans too. :)

@christina22: If your UC GPA is 2.92 you do not qualify to apply to any UC, the minimum UC GPA is 3.0. You need to concentrate on some Cal States and possible privates such as Whittier, Redlands, La Verne and Azusa Pacific.

@christina22 Yes, you can get into UCSC. Although your GPA isn’t super high, UCSC are the “easier” for lack of a better word of the UC’s to get into. UCM, UCR, and UCSC are possible! Good luck! (Assuming your GPA meets the requirements as stated by Gumbymom.)

My UC GPA does not have my junior year summer credits (Took Health, got an A and retook Pre Calc got a B both semesters to replace failed courses) Do you think it would make any difference to my GPA, @Gumbymom ? Azusa Pacific is definitely on my list for apps, as well as two CSUs. I have my essay half written (about everything I went through that took my time away in junior year and I’m hoping that could show the UCs my potential and using senior grades to show improvement. @IBGuy101

@Fysiks Hopefully that’s the case! I’ve been chancing on other sites and my chances are a bit lower than avg, but there’s still a chance. Thank you so much!! This really encouraged me!

@Christina22 Ok if i was in your situation, I would apply for admittion by exception (due to your low uc gpa) so they can atleast see what you have to say in your essay.

You need to include a-g required classes you took this summer in your UC GPA. If it is 3.0 or higher, then you qualify. UC’s will not see your Senior grades, only the classes you will be taking this year. Your GPA is just Sophomore/Junior year including the summer courses. Senior year courses will only help you keep your acceptances as long as you maintain a GPA of 3.0 and no grades lower than a C. You really need to focus on other schools than the UC’s. Your chances are very slim unless you write stellar essays and even then, there is no guarantee.
Here is the link for admission by exception: http://admission.universityofcalifornia.edu/freshman/requirements/admission-by-exception/index.html</a></p>

@IbGuy101 I was considering that option if my GPA didn’t meet the required 3.0 GPA, but yes. Thank you, I think I might be doing that with or without the gpa.

@Gumbymom I inputted my grades again with the summer classes/etc., and it comes out exactly 3.0. I’ve been trying to convince my parents that I should apply to more CSUs or private colleges, but they’re adamant on me going to a UC. Thank you for telling me all the info! I think I know what my priorities should be. Safety schools are definitely a must.

You might want to consider attending a Community College for 2 years and then using TAG to get into your UC of choice (except UCLA/UCSD/UCB do not do TAG). I would ask your parents to visit the UC application website and let them look at the average GPA’s and SAT scores for each UC to give them a better idea of your chances.
http://admission.universityofcalifornia.edu/campuses/santa-cruz/index.html</a></p>

I have considered it (with UCSB), but if I do get accepted by UCSC or waitlisted for any other schools - I would rather go to the UC school right off the bat freshman year. I’ve also talked to my counselor about it and he mentioned Riverside will be the likely school for me. My main focus is getting into a UC school with enough safeties to secure my position. But I’ll be sure to talk to my parents about the choices. @Gumbymom
