UC Tag Withdrawal Question

Will dropping a class a month before applying for TAG ruin my chances of getting accepted?

I'm taking a Summer course (As a GPA Booster) and finding it a bit difficult due to late registration and missing out on the first few chapters.

Assist GPA: 3.21
Major GPA: 4.00
TAG GPA Requirement: 3.20
Economics TAG at UC Davis

I'd greatly appreciate a response; my counselor has not been responding and the drop out deadline is the 15th.

As long as you don’t fail to meet the requirements for the TAG, I doubt 1 W will affect your admission decision.

If that class is a necessary component for your TAG, then your TAG will most likely be rescinded, and definitely reduce your chances of gaining admission considering TAG 100%n guarantees you’ll transfer to whatever UC you did the TAG with.

I’ve heard of some students here who had TAG, but didn’t get into the campus they TAG’d to. I honestly don’t know how that’s possible. I’m reading the TAG guide right now and it explicitly states that if you meet the requirements, you will be offered admission.

Here’s UCI’s tag straight from their website

UC Irvine’s Transfer Admission Guarantee Program (TAG) guarantees admission to highly-qualified students from all California community colleges. Admission to most majors at UC Irvine can be guaranteed through TAG for transfer students who meet the eligibility requirements and complete the online TAG application.

I should mention that if you switch your major, that will render your TAG lifeless/obsolete/useless/worthless. I think that’s what some students did after they TAG’d, didn’t mention that they failed to meet the requirements after fall semester, etc.

Just meet the requirements, make sure you get a second evaluation from a school counselor, and you should be set.

They didn’t get into the campus they TAG’d to because they failed to meet all the requirements. It’s simple as that. If someone is complaining about how they TAG’d and didn’t get in and useless it is, blah blah blah, well, you can tell that person can’t read and/or follow a simple checklist.

You list your GPA but having the minimum required units before you apply to TAG is just as important. If you already have 30 units completed and this class isn’t a major pre-req that you need to finish, dropping it won’t hurt you.

Agreed @k4201505‌. My daughter TAG’d UCSB but was taking math IP (it needed to be completed by fall, a TAG requirement only specified by UCSB). Anyhow, in all the hullabaloo we missed it, as did her counselor, so she was tossed out of TAG.

Also, just a minor heads up, as I have been studying the calculation of units, I have found that people miscalculate total units a lot when applying AP credit (there are caps, and occasional duplication with later classes), courses from different CCs that may inadvertently overlap, or taking a series out of sequence (the units from the out of sequence class are dropped). So it’s not unusual that a person might end up with less units than they thought if their transcript is complicated.

@BurntCorpse‌
Actually I have a total of two W’s (one of which is a non-UC Transferrable course and I retook it and got an A).
This Sociology course is not a requirement for me and I am just taking it as a GPA booster. I think I’m gonna go ahead and drop this class. Thanks!

@k4201505‌ I have over 30 credits! Thank you, I am planning to drop this course!
