Im new to cc, and this is my first post!

I will be attending UCSD this fall as a Molecular Biology Major. I actually really want to major in Bioengineering, but its impacted in UCSD. I already tried calling the department but they said there was no way i could change my major to bioengineering. UC Berkeley's BioE major is not impacted, so i was wondering if I would be able to transfer. Using my AP credits, I will have 90 units by the end of my freshman year, giving me junior status. However, I will not have finished ALL of my lower division requirements. Is it necessary that I finish all my lower division classes requirements for Molecular Biology to transfer? What are my changes of getting a transfer after freshman year?

very low. even lower, considering you want in on an equally-competitive program at UCB.

why didn't you just attend UCB to begin with, instead of going through all this?

My friend's sister tried to do something similar a few years ago...it got REALLY REALLY REALLY messy. I would think long and hard before pursuing this.

OMFG, I am in the same boat as you... I wanted to study BioMed E too, but it's impacted :(

You need to look up exactly what the prerequisites are for the major you want at UCB and plan your schedule so you can finish all these by the end of your Freshman year. However, I think you have almost no chance of transferring after 1 year.

The reason is, say for example you're trying to transfer into the MCB major at UCB. The prerequisites are something like this:
3 quarters Physics
3 quarters Biology
3 Quarters Gen Chem
3 Quarters Organic Chem
Other stuff (like math)

If you don't have all your prerequisites done you have essentially 0 chance of getting in. So although it is technically possible to transfer a courseload like the one you would have to take would be very demanding.

I know UCB has advisors for stuff like this, call them up and get them to help you if you're serious about it.

Thanks longdaysahead! Ill probably end up calling the admission counselors and ask them. On another thread, there was a guy who got into Cal after one year, who didn't finish all his prereqs. So hopefully I have hope.
