I'm currently a student at UC Merced with a major in computer science and engineering. Would it be possible for me to transfer into UC Irvine as a computer science major? My reason for asking is because my school only offers computer science and engineering and the transfer requirements for computer science are different than those for computer science and engineering. I would prefer not to apply as computer science and engineering and then switch to computer science once I am there due to the fact that there would be some unnecessary classes. Another question is whether prerequisites are the courses included in the requirements to transfer or all the courses needed for that major at the school.

You should complete the prerequisite requirements for UCI’s computer science major. Transferring into a different major is completely possible but if you focus on completing UCI’s computer science prerequisites you run the risk of falling behind in the classes you need for your major at Merced. That being said, be very sure that you want to transfer because if you don’t, it’s possible that UCI’s prerequisite classes for comp sci won’t be necessary for your major at Merced.

Oh, and for your second question, prerequisites are usually just the lower division classes. There are a lot more classes you will have to take after you have transferred.

Thank you for the response! Just to make sure are you saying that on my application I can apply as computer science rather than getting in as computer science and engineering and then transferring into computer science?

The people that you can count on to give the right answer work in UCI admissions. You should be calling or emailing them instead of hoping you get the right answer from an internet forum. Or you can ask away, keeping in mind that you (and you alone) bear the consequences for any inadvertently incorrect answer.

It is always best to check the source so please give UCI admissions a call just for your own peace of mind, but as long as you finish the prerequisite requirements you could conceivably apply to transfer directly into any major.
