I am applying for fall '08. Are the application essays optional?

Yea you do not need to write one if you don't want to get accepted! However, if you have a transfer guarantee you probably do not need to write one that is if you are only applying to that school that you have the agreement with. If you are planning to apply to a school that you do not have a transfer guarantee with especially UCLA or Berkeley it is vital to submit a personal statement.

Personal statement is very important for Cal and UCLA.. and it is menditory for other UC schools..

thedude44, do you mean the agreements, like Santa Monica College's scholars program? These agreements mean I do not have to write personal statements?

chicago- eventhough, you are in scholar program you must write a personal statement!!

its a requirement

So I have a question about the essays. For the first one (preparation for major), in high school I had a lot of opportunity in high school for stuff like that, but in my one year at UCSD, I didn;t really come across opportunities. Would it look bad if I only talked about preparation from high school?

If you are a transfer student yes! you could write little bit about the preparation about highschool but try to use the current ones.

rdw...try to write about preparation using life in general. preparation is not just about opportunities that you come across but also about how you prepare for your major (internally) as an individual. The UC's want to know how you are going to interreact w/ others in your major and how you seek out opportunities in life that enhance your learning. Special classes that you have taken that apply to your major are great, and yes HS experiemces are fine but expand on them to encompass what you are doing now.
btw..What is your major and where are you trying to transfer?

See, why I was wondering is that I am an environmental systems major, and during high school I designed, delegated and accomplished 6 projects involving environmental planning/restoration which is way more important and beneficial than any lecture class where you sit there and listen to a teacher tell you about all these projects.
I will be a junior level transfer, but I only did 1 year at UCSD, and am applying to transfer to UCSB or UCSC. I only got to take 1 class relating to my major, because the other 11 were all GE's. I was going to mention that in the essays, and I am doing some environmental volunteering this summer, which I was also going to mention, but seeing as how I actually DID this stuff in high school, in my mind that it more important.

Well i'm applying as an out-of-state transfer student. excellent GPA. 4.0/4.0, but I had a question about the breadth requirements. I know you have to have 7 of 9 done, but i'm a bit confused. Would these fulfill the 7...?

You need two courses of English, like 1a and 1b, and a biological science without a lab, assuming your geology course had a lab component (like physical anthropology).

the summer project will be an excellent experience to write about in preparation for your major, along w/ what you have learned from the one class, i wouldn't concentrate too much on why you were not able to take more major specific classes since the uc knows you have to get through your GE courses the first two years, rather I would concentrate on all positive things like your experiences and what you plan to learn and contribute to your major...I don't think you will have a problem getting into either of those schools.

akbaby....diamond is right...I don't see any English classes in your list...I know it's allot harder to figure out because assist does not work w/ oos students but your counselor should be able to pull up the requirements and do a comparison. I know mine was able to when I was going to apply for Tulane & LSU but I ended up sticking w/ CA schools.

Ah, sorry diamondprynzez. For transfers, you only need to complete 7 of 9 breadth requirements, so i'm thinking that if I did get in for Fall '08, I would just take a biological requirement there. But for now, would these 7 fulfill the requirement. Please answer soon so I can decide my courses for next year! Thanks!
