As a child I was fascinated by plants and curious as to how they grew. I watched my mom and dad plant everything from roses to succulents as they told me their names. When they decided to sow their own lawn and build a vegetable and fruit bed, I was more than willing to help. They quickly noticed my interest in the outdoors and signed me up for Boy Scouts, the best decision they could have made. I wasnt sure why I liked the outdoors so much, I just knew every time we went camping, river rafting, or hiking I felt like I was at home.

The summer before my freshman year of high school I went on a two week backpacking trip in the Rocky Mountains with the Scouts. It rained every single day but I still loved it because when youre walking somewhere you have time to notice and appreciate the little things. I began understanding that plant species favor certain climates and have adapted advantageous characteristics. What fascinated me even more was how something as small as a seed could develop into such a large plant. Though we learned about different species of plants and animals in Boy Scouts, I was more interested in how the environment played a role in the growth of a species.

High school science class was always somewhat interesting, but when the chapter on photosynthesis came up my interest turned into fascination. I began connecting things I noticed as a child with new information I had been taught in school. The ability to apply what I was learning inside of class, outside of class, was something I had yet to do in any other subject besides math. As my interest grew I began researching and learning on my own. I would put off my history homework so that I could learn more about which medium a plant grows best in, and what nutrients they prefer during different cycles of their life. I knew then that a major in Plant or Environmental Sciences would be ideal. I had never been so interested in something before, this euphoria that came with obtaining new information that I was passionate about was addicting. I promised myself I would not let money decide what my career was going to be, I could not bear the thought of working a nine to five desk job in some huge cooperation.

The only thing I was confused about was where to put what my intended major was (And what if my intended major is called something different at other UC's I'm applying too?**
