I’m an OOS student with pretty decent stats, and UCSB just rejected me. I guess this will happen again for all higher ranked UC campuses that I applied to.
GPA: 3.8 from a state school.
Major: CS
Pre-reqs: Completed
Many national and regional honors & awards.
One int’l scholarship and an internship with a top-notch company in Silicon Valley.
Seems like getting into UCs is not going to be any easier for OOS students this year
@gvikei UCSB has specific rules that don’t always apply elsewhere, for instance taking the req math last term with no other math on the transcript. That equals rejection. Even if that does not apply to you, they all have their own unique reasons for acceptance and rejection. You may very well get accepted elsewhere, assuming req are met.
One potential prob is what you think is a course match may not be, or they may recalculate your units and award you less. You may want to call UCSB and try to find out the reason. They don’t always tell you but sometimes they will.
Everybody is charged the same tuition. Tax payers usually cover the rest for in-state students. That’s why the UCs can offer seats to OOS students. Its not that they don’t have the room, its because they don’t have the money to cover the rest of your in-state tuition. Out of state students don’t get the $40k or whatever from taxpayers.
@gvikei wait someone from OOS actually got a response, I didn’t get anything yet, but yes @lindyk8 is correct about SB, I searched through the forums and found that someone got rejected from UCSB and UCSC but got into UCLA and UCB in the end, so be hopeful
Just read over this thread – as an OOS student myself, I was curious. So much negativity!
It is definitely not “impossible” to get into a UC, although for obvious reasons, it is much, much more difficult.
I got invited to the UCLA Arts Open House and there were several other OOS students there as well who had been “recommended for admission”. From what they told us, our departments have already accepted us, so now it’s up to the UC.
So, it is definitely not “impossible” like someone said! Have hope!
pre-mathematics for UCSB, though its not impacted. I took the major prereqs at CCC since I am a CA resident, which is why I probably got in, even as a OOS applicant.
no I took some math classes during the summer for fun at a CCC, ( I wasn’t originally planning to transfer), but I loved math more than I thought, so that’s when I decided to transfer. I was already in the middle of the fall semester in my OOS college, and I signed a lease for an apartment, so I couldn’t leave until the end of spring. (Ya, bad choices, but that’s life)
Thank you @Xaeyvr. I was expecting for a bad result this evening (as being rejected by UCSB last month) until I saw the acceptance message! How is it going for you?
@gvikei It’s good but I’m kind of sad. I’ll leave all my good friends from my out of state college, hope I make some new friends at a UC or maybe meet up with some HS buddies
