Currently i am attending a CC trying to transfer into UC however before attending this cc i was going to SFSU for a few years but got dismissed because i could not get out of academic probation. I want to transfer to a UC and I was wondering how my previous attendance at sfsu would affect my chances on my application as a transfer student. I was wondering if anyone could give me some insight on this because my academic advisors could not tell me and I am still waiting for my perspective uc admissions advisors to get back to me with an answer. All replies will be greatly appreciated !

I’m sorry to be a jerk, but how are you going to survive at a UC if you couldn’t survive at a State? Good luck getting in though!

I think if an academic advisor doesn’t know the answer, and the uc admissions advisors also don’t know the answer, then that already says something about your situation. That is: you won’t know until after you apply and get rejected or accepted. I was in a tricky situation myself having attended a 4 year art school, and because there wasn’t any transfer agreement between UCs and my 4 year school, and because I had received a less than 3.0 gpa at my art school, I really didn’t know where I stood in regards to admissions. After art school, I immediately enrolled at CCs and did the best of my ability to do the IGETC curriculum, my gpa at CC was somewhere around 3.4-3.6. I got into Berk, UCLA, and UCI. However that also probably has to do with the fact that my major at all schools wasn’t an impacted one. Major will also be another deciding factor. Whether or not the UCs only looked at my CC GPA because of the IGETC, I don’t know. I still don’t even know, I just know I got into those schools, and am attending one of them now. Also, you may want to review the UC application, because I think the UC application doesn’t allow you to list any grades lower than a C. So all those D’s and F’s that you may have received will not be made aware to the UC until after the fact when your transcripts go in. They will have admitted you based on your record of grades C or higher, and based on transferable coursework.

I just say start from scratch at a CC, and try not to rely on your Cal State coursework. Even if you end up repeating a class, that repetition might help with canceling out your Cal State grade, or maybe they’ll average it out. If you get in then you do, if you don’t then you don’t. Worst case scenario you end up back at SFSU or any other cal state.

@banhbaochien “I appreciate your concern banhbao about my capabilities and to answer your question, I have made changes to my habits and priorities. I can assure you my dissmissal from SFSU was not a result from any incompetency in my coursework but rather my priorities which did not involve furthering my education at the time being. Thanks for wishing me luck.”

@liek0806 " Thanks for your reply and advice. I’m glad you got into your prospective schools. At this point that is the route I am going, starting fresh at a CC and working to complete my IGETC. One reason I was looking for some clarification is because some of the classes I need to transfer into my prospective UC’s won’t be usable to transfer to CSU and vice-versa. As I already wasted enough time at SFSU, I’d rather not waste anymore. =]

Usually it’s the other way around, some CC classes for CSU won’t transfer into UC, because CSU transferable courses tend to be “practical” and more focused on trade/major.
I don’t know what your major is, but generally speaking, if the GE counts for IGETC for a UC, it will also count for a CSU. It usually states in your course catalog if it is transferable to both by having a mark next to the class title that looks like the following: “(CSU/IGETC)”

What if you just didnt tell them you attended SFSU? I realize you arent “supposed” to do this…but how would they know?

I wouldnt recommended doing it though unless they tell you that you are ineligible and therefore would have nothing to lose by trying.

I went to SFSU as well for a year! iam applying now to UC’s, after attending cc. One thing that sucks about SFSU is that hardly any classes transfer to a CC.

But, to answer your question, its best to enroll in a community college and then apply to UC’s. When you start at cc, make sure you get good grades and by good grades I mean close to a 4.0, enroll in TAG and join some clubs.
I personally think you still have a shot. When you finally aplly to UC’s make sure you mention in your personal letter your situation and what motivated you to perform better.

Hope this helped :)
