UC Transfers and non-IGETC class GPAs

I'm a CC student currently in my 3rd semester, still maintaining a 4.0 GPA. I found out a week ago that I don't need to take 2 semesters of a foreign language since I took German way back in high school. I'm currently enrolled in German 1 so my motivation for studying for that class has dropped, and it's a real time sink class that takes up a lot of time studying that could be spent on my harder classes.

My question is, when it comes time to transfer will the school factor it into my GPA even though it's not part of IGETC? I've gotten As on all the tests and homework so far, so I could really half-ass it and still pull a C, but I'd rather focus on my other classes. Or should I just drop German and take the W?

If you get an A in that class, it’ll be a big boost to your GPA.

That’s true, but it might be hard to get As in my other classes as well, and they’re pre-req classes I need for transfer. Does one W look that bad on a transcript when I have a good reason for dropping it? I don’t plan on W’ing any more classes since realistically I think I could pull a 3.7 or so by transfer time.

Does the one from high school fully cover the requirement?

And yeah the German course will be fully calculated into your GPA as any other class would be even if it isn’t being used to certify your IGETC.

Put it this way, it’s a 5 unit A if you get an A in the class which will allow you to get a B (if necessary) in a harder class down the road and keep a higher GPA than if you hadn’t finished it, it also counts towards your 60 units and most likely towards an AA (if you want one)

If worst comes to worst and you really hate it and your language requirement is already 100% covered then withdraw, UC’s don’t care about W’s but don’t half ass it.

A few Ws won’t do ■■■■ to your admission chances. If it’s an easy A why drop it? You probably don’t even need to invest that much time since you’re pretty good at German. I wouldn’t drop it if I were you, but it’s your choice.

I took German for 2 years in HS and apparently that’s enough to satisfy the requirement. I wish I would’ve checked that for myself but I moved over here from AZ, and their colleges have different requirements so I didn’t really think it though. I guess I’m worried that I won’t be able to keep up a 4.0 in my math/science classes while also spending time on German. I did take German in HS but that was over 15 years ago so I’ve pretty much forgotten all of it. Then again holding on to a 4.0 is unrealistic so maybe I should just stay in German for the GPA boost.

Thanks for the advice, it’s really helpful.

No problem! In case you don’t do so hot in your math/science classes, you will have a nice 4/5 unit language class to help your GPA this semester. Good luck
