UC

Hi there. I have 3.0 GPA. I’m in the academy of finance, speech and debate, academic decathlon, president of Armenian club, and founder of bicycling club. What are my chances of getting into CSULB and UCSB? I want to major in communications and spanish

Assuming you are in high school, i am just guessing without a bit more info, including test scores -

Both schools (and all other CSUs and UCs) use a modified GPA which includes just 10-11 and only college prep classes. Read about it and calculate your UC.CSU GPA here:

Also, both systems are sticklers for the required classes - a-g’ as they are called. If you miss one semester of one of the requirement, you’ll be rejected system-wide. This list covers both systems.

You need a minumum 3.0 UC GPA to apply (as a freshman) to a UC - They will take your $85 application fee but, won’t review your application.

For UCSB, even with a 3.1 GPA, you’d need a near perfect SAT/ACT and some smoking extra curricular activities to be a viable candidate.

CSULB and all the CSUs except SLO use a simple index to rank students - it combines your GPA and test scores - then they stack the applications in order, drawing the line when seats are full. With a 3.0 CSU GPA, you’d need a 1450/1600 SAT or 33 ACT.

Consider starting at a CC or broadening your search to include some less selective schools. CSU Monterey and CI are close to the ocean. Perhaps Sonoma or Sacramento a bit inland.

Tell us more about yourself for further guidance.

well im a sophomore in high school still… but im thinking about going to PCC or SMC then transfering in… as far as EC’S can i use my high school things… or do i have to start fresh with my CC?

Cal States and UC’s only accept Junior level transfers (60 sememster or 90 quarter units) so you would probably need 2 years at a CC to transfer unless you have alot of AP course credit. Once you start a CC, you HS grades/test scores no longer count towards your transfer requirements, so you start fresh.
