UCB Hopefull

Hi,

I'm attending a CCC and hoping to get into UCB as a psych major. Right now I have a 3.5 GPA but it will more than likely be up to a 3.7 by the time I'm ready to transfer. What is worrying me right now is EC's. I work part time at a local drug store, work in the college tutorial center as a philosophy tutor, and am a member of 2 clubs (philosophy and psychology).... and that's it. Is this enough? If not does anyone have any good ideas as to what I could be doing?

Thanks,

I'm guessing you didn't apply for Fall 08, but will be for Fall 09?

Your EC's sound pretty standard or above average from what I've seen. I personally asked a UCB admissions rep who came to my school about EC's and she said that packing them in is really something the high school kids do but not nearly as important for us as transfers.

Get your GPA up, do all your major prep (use Welcome to ASSIST to make sure you're taking the right classes) and write an excellent personal statement and the rest should take care of itself.

And btw, funny screen name.

Good luck

The Social Sciences are competitive the admit rate is 25% "Preparation is critical for the competitive majors in Psychology and Economics" quote from the transfer flyer from Berkeley. And admissions rep said that the average GPA to the social sciences is 3.8.
But getting to your question your EC's should be fine. UC's also take into consideration that you are working and that you really do not have time to have a lot of EC's (not saying you do not have enough EC's). However if I were you I would try to become an officer in the psychology club or try to find a more creative EC for psychology to distinguish yourself from other psychology majors.

If one or more of your EC's is getting in the job of better grades...you know what to do :p

I do realize that my grades are somewhat low... I have had several bad semesters. Basically... for some reason... I began to start to experience symptoms of schizophrenia... (paranoid) and was tripping out. Went to various mental health care physicians are recieved anti psychotic medication. I stopped taking my medication, relapsed, and fell into an episode of major depression. I overcame that though... and ive got a huge upward trend to my grades

should i write about this in my personal statement, or put it in the open ended section?

Yes you should explain that in your personal statement to explain your upward trend.
