UCB/UCLA or UCSD w/Regents and Honors program.

ok heres the thing
my family is poor. 0 efc. enough said.
anyways although uc's are pretty cheap bcus i am california citizen, it still aint nice.

my question is
UCLA/UCB or UCSD with Regents (6K scholarship per year plus other goodies) and Honors program. UCLA will be about 9K per year but it will get more expensive.

anyone see any plus and minus sides?
thanks!

its depressing when schools dont offer low income students, like me, enough money. thats why im going to be forced to reject UCLA to go to UCSD. LA is expensive. Yea, loans are great but in the long run they are a drag. Thats why i weigh out WHAT kind of loans, such as subsidized, work study etc.

My son was faced with the same dilemma a few years ago. He had an EFC of $0 and was offered a fullride at UCI and UCD. UC Berkeley would cost approx $9K per year.

He is now a junior at Berkeley. He works 8 - 12 hours per week during the school year and fulltime during thes summer. He will graduate debt free.

For my son, Cal was definitely the right choice.

This is a really tough one. UCSD is a great school, the location is beautiful. I guess my advice would depend partly on your major. It also depends how you feel. If UCB is your dream, going there and taking on some debt probably would be worth it. If you can see yourself just as happy at UCSD, it’s always nice to go where they REALLY want you and are ready to roll out the red carpet.

If you’re heading towards engineering, computer science, economics or business, go to Cal. You will --most likely-- be able to pay off your debts when you graduate from any of those courses at Cal. Otherwise, go for UCSD w/Regents and Honors program.

I noticed you mentioned UCLA and not UCB in your post with respect to cost. So is your decision between UCLA and Berkeley? Also, would you be a commuter to save money if you go to UCLA or Berkeley? That might help.

That said, its a tough call, but graduating without debt is a huge relief and LA and Berkeley are both expensive places to live as is La Jolla. So that 6K (is that per year) would be pretty huge if they are covering all your costs. A little more info would help, but keep in mind UCSD is a GREAT place. If you can do UCLA or CAL with less than 20K in debt upon graduation, then I might consider either one, but otherwise I would take the UCSD offer.

so sorry about that…
i meant ucb which is a few ranks below ucsd…
would that change the scenario??
