UCD on the rise?

I was curious to get opinions on UCDs future factoring in the new chancellor, recent expansion of the school, budget cuts, etc. Will it be on par with other top UCs? Is there potential for it to rise academically from other institutions (i.e. other than UCs)?

I feel UCD has great potential, but resources (faculty and budget) must be channelled strategically. What do you think?

I sure hope the new chancellor will make a big difference and have UCD join UCLA and UCB  thatll be sick! but I don’t think its coming anytime soon hahaha! :)

UCD is already in the upper tier of UC’s. Maybe it’s not as academically reputed as much as UCLA or UCB is, but it will definitely get there in it’s own time. LA & Berkeley have been established way longer than Davis has, but Davis has some unique things that LA & Berkeley can’t compare to.

Every UC is on the rise, but the new chancellor will help Davis especially, and Davis continues to have the largest increase in freshman applications for 2years running now, probably 09 as well, so I’d say it’s looking good. It’s also a very new campus.

Explain what UCD may have that uniquely sets it apart from UCB/UCLA/UCSD.

I have visited all campuses and feel that UCD is growing physically (i.e. buildings)at an enormous rate.

Would the move to D1 really help it that much.

(BTW: UCD footbal will play CAL in 2010! Hopefully UCD will do to CAL the same it did to Stanford.)

Cows, bikes, toad tunnels, circles, student body’s personality etc.

To be honest, all these rankings and the like are irrelevant to anything of relative importance.

Some of things that UCD has that other UCs do not

A veterinary school
an equestrian center
all sorts of agriculture-related fields such as viticulture for example
More space than the others - I believe UCD is the largest campus among the UCs
and who could forget the cows?

I am sure there are many others.

continuing on to strykemom’s post

-The undergraduate student government of UC Davis is the Associated Students of UC Davis (ASUCD), and has an annual operating budget of 10.5 million dollars, making it the best-funded student government in the United States
-one of the only 2 UCs to have its own fire department, the other is UCSC
-one of the only 2 UCs to have a nuclear lab, the other is UCB
-only UC with an airport
-aggie pack - the largest student-run school spirit organization in the United States

Some stuff about the city

-The city of Davis boasts the highest number of bikes per capita of any U.S. city.
-City of Davis once held the record for the World’s Largest bicycle parade

In addition to what the others said, UCD has two qualities that give it potential to rise further.

-3rd biggest library in the UC system (over 3 million books)
-3rd biggest endowment (over $600 million)
-Decent reputation (according to USNWR, peer assessment score is 3.8)

I think it is realistic to expect UCD to one day be the undisuputed 4th best UC campus. But of course, UCI and UCSB are also very good campuses with strong student bodies and faculties, so the competition will be stiff.

not sure if I heard correctly… but when I was at orientation, one of the speakers (forgot who it was, it was some fat white guy if i recall correctly) said that UCD has the best internship/career center of all the UCs. could anyone check up on that and where it stands in the nation? I googled around and couldn’t really find much about it.

I lol’d hard. Seriously, though, UCD has a lot to offer, but reputation doesn’t matter anyway.
