I’m from the L.A. area, and where should I go (communications or international studies major)? UCD is a UC campus, but seems kind of far away from it all, SDSU is a Cal State campus but seems to be in a more “big city” area?

Can you visit both? It is so important. What if you really prefer one campus over the other? In general, UCs are considered a step above CSUs, but SDSU is one very good school and is really popular for a reason. I don't know about the difference between these specific majors. (sandavis - cute!)

You should always take a UC education if you have the opportunity! It will open many more doors for you. What people tell you something seems to be and reality are probably not even close. It is very important to visit.

Davis will probably offer you a greater amount of resources and opportunities, but it really is in your best favor to check out both campuses. Davis is in a smaller college town, but sacramento is only 15 minutes away and the bay area about 45 minutes to an hour, you really gotta see which you fit in at best.

If you're looking for glitz and glam and slutty girls and tons of fratboys -- in essence, a really bumpin' lifestyle that's a lot less serious and way more materialistic -- pick SDSU.

If you really care more about academics, then pick UC Davis. Not that we don't have slutty girls or fratboys or materialism, it just depends on what's more important to you.

if finishing in 4 years is important to you, choose UC Davis

UCD, if you care about academics at all.

Congrats on both acceptances nice job. Personally I favor Davis and agree that a visit is really important.

Definitely Davis,

Its a UC

Better Teachers

Better job options

Better Environment (although SDSU is nice too)

Chill and Relaxed people, but not the party atmosphere of SDSU

SDSU is just a really popular school, very much like UCD, but my personal opinion is SDSU's popularity is not because its a better school, but UCD's popularity is.

I agree with Cali Trumpet on all of those but one: I have to challenge #4, "better environment"... it depends on what you're looking for in environment. Davis has a laid-back, relaxed but still academically-minded atmosphere. SDSU has a really party- and beach-minded atmosphere. If you're looking for a high-energy and very-active environment, SDSU has the better environment. If you're looking for something a little more low-key and comfortable, less social pressure, Davis has the better environment.

Moreover, SDSU has a ton of students who commute. You definitely won't have that college-town feel there if you're looking for that.

I'm reluctant to say any of this though because I don't want to make it seem like Davis is just a bunch of lame kids who never have any fun. There is plenty of fun to be had in and out of Davis, it's just not the top priority for most people. I get the sense that more people come to Davis to get an education whereas more people go to SDSU to have an experience.

Here's some advice from an SDSU student transferring out.

SDSU is pretty on the outside (in terms of women, VERY pretty) but shallow on the inside. The school population is vast in size at approximately 35,000 students. You are basically a number in the system and can easily feel lost if you don't make friends right away. You'll see a lot of "bro" looking dudes, basically the fratboy tool character and a lot of skanky looking girls. However, the school is huge and you will definitely meet chill people there, they are just a bit harder to find cuz we are outnumbered by the epic magnitude of tools. If you are looking for the party and the Greek scene in general, SDSU is for you. I came looking for the party but ultimately regretted it because overall, the people are very immature. I enjoy partying on the weekends but not with complete idiots. If I were you, I'd choose Davis. But then again, the people that I described absolutely love the school. So if your down to join a the greek system, I'd definitely say go to SDSU. Oh and the academics aren't bad here but I'm sure UCD is better.

I've been accepted to UCSC and UCSB and am waiting on Davis. I have a bunch of friends in UCSC and that's where I'll most likely end up. Maybe I just wasn't used to the SoCal atmosphere but I'm stoked to go back north. Davis can be fun too and I'm sure you can find a party on the weekends but it's definitely not the crazy party scene that SDSU is. Anyway, I hope this helps. Picking colleges in high school can be pretty stressful. Remember if you don't like a place, you can always transfer after 2 years. It worked for me.

As someone from the Southern California area, within 20 minutes of SDSU, I do think that SDSU is a nice looking campus. If your into the sports atmosphere, well SDSU has alot of sporting events. Though, Davis does too.

I guess what I meant bandislife is that the campus environment is better at Davis then SDSU. SDSU is in the middle of downtown San Diego and the surrounding area is not that great. Its not like the school looks over the water or something like SB does. Davis seems to be built around the campus, which is very ideal whether you are a partier or just a normal person.

This is why I like the environment at UCSC so much, its such a peaceful and quiet beach town with alot of chill people who are very accepting. The campus at UCSC is just a forest, with buildings here and there.
