Hi CCers,

I'm in a strange position as I was a transfer student to UCD. Some family issues along with my decision to change majors forced me to withdraw early. As a result, I'm currently "subject to dismissal" due to not averaging the 13 units/quarter requirement. My GPA is 3.3 UC GPA but I'm no longer in Davis and withdrew prior to spring quarter. I am currently taking the necessary pre-reqs at my CC to transfer out to a closer-to-home school so that I can be here for my family while learning.

So, my questions are: is this possible and realistic? And will I be dismissed from UCD despite my withdrawn status? Thanks everyone.

Edit: I have my IGETC done, working on Poli and Speech in case I apply to CSUs.

You need to call Davis and ask them what your status is. If you are in bad standing at any UC, you can’t transfer to another. Since you’ve already taken classes at Davis, you also need to be concerned with the unit cap got transferring.

Thanks @2016Candles. To clarify, I am in good standing for the quarters I attended but got an email saying I am subject to dismissal (even though I withdrew, which is what is confusing me). I will contact a UCD advisor for more info. Also, I passed 17 units from UCD so I believe I am ok with not surpassing the max units transferable for UC-UC.

I think you have a tough road ahead, but it’s doable for sure. I’ve seen the same instance where students in your situation were successful at leaving a UC on average/poor standing, entering a CC, then back into a UC. As candles pointed out, make sure you call Davis first to ensure you are in fine standing with them. Tell them straight up what your concern is, don’t be vague. This way you get a clear answer on how they will respond when the UC that you want inquires to your status with them. Hope that makes sense.

The biggest concern of course is the UC having evidence that you can not handle the UC academic standards. That’s a tough hurdle to overcome I think. But show some significant increase in GPA while at CC and explain yourself as wanting the second chance to succeed, and you should be fine.

Golod luck!

So to be clear, you had at least 60 transferrable units, then added 17 units at Davis, and are now back at CCC taking more units, finishing IGETC. If you’re over your unit cap (it varies at different UCs), usually they just won’t count some of the CCC units (although you can get subject credit). I say “usually” because there are some general complications. You really need to talk to someone at the UC you are interested in attending. As you switched majors there are also those major requirements now on the table. It’s complicated on many levels. Give them a call.

BTW, having a 3.3 GPA from UCD is not bad and in some majors, such as engineering, is pretty good. These were your first two quarters, after all. That’s nearly a B+. As long as you explain your withdrawal, and all your classes line up, it should be fine - although a huge amount will depend on your previous terms in CC. If there are gaps or other withdrawals, they may see a trend they don’t like.
