Hi. I'm currently a psychology major at UC Davis. I applied to transfer to Cal in the same major. At Davis I am doing a B.S. so I haven't completed my GEs due to the required science classes. It is possible for me to finish the Berkeley L&S breadth requirements next quarter (I am missing three classes). My question: is completing the 7 course breadth requirement required? Would I still be considered if I'm missing one course? I ask because I am pre-med and need to start my physics series as soon as possible. Taking all those GEs wouldn't allow for that.

The Cal psychology path pdf says:

"You must satisfy GE/breadth requirements with either IGETC or the College of Letters and Science requirements (reading and Composition, Quantitative reasoning and Foreign Language) by the end of the spring term preceding fall enrollment."

I have completed the reading composition, quantitative reasoning, and foreign language requirement.

My stats are decent if that matters in this post at all. I have a very high GPA based primarily on science classes and psych classes (including upper divs), I've been a research assistant since the Fall, and an undergrad TA since freshman year. I have some other extracurricular activities as well but they are not related to my major. I understand that missing important courses will override my other stats so I would really appreciate some input! :)

No, for UC transfers, GE’s are not required. BUT, you must complete major prereqs. I assume you finished your english etc. I took no quantitative reasoning (math) classes for UCR–>UCB

The UCB app this year says we can finish GE’s over the summer too, so that may help

According to their website you have to complete your GE requirements prior to admission. For CC transfers it’s IGETC or the 7 course breadth. For UC to UC transfers it’s generally UC reciprocity, where you finish your GEs at your current UC, which will satisfy the GE requirements after you transfer.

Also, Berkeley is VERY strict in terms of getting their students to graduate on time. I highly doubt they would admit anyone with any significant amount of GE requirements to complete because they give you a maximum of 5 semesters to graduate. If you still have GE requirements to complete it’s less likely that you’ll graduate within that 2 1/2 years, something that’s becoming more rare even for people with all their GEs and pre-reqs completed going into a UC.

Thank you for taking the time to reply to my topic. However, you have both given two different answers so I’d really appreciate if a third person could weigh in!

wanago2college, my UCB supplemental app says that I can finish my major prereqs over the summer but not my GEs. I have taken all the required English and math classes, but I have not finished the 7 course breadth requirement.

dilapidatedmind, I understand that the Cal is very strict about graduating time. I would not plan on leaving all my GEs for after transfer, just one. My question was more whether they would even consider me if I’m missing one GE class but still finish my major prerequisites before I transfer. I have also already taken two upper division psych classes (and received A+ in both).

I am currently missing three GEs and two major prereqs (yeah I wasn’t planning to transfer originally…) My options are: finish my major prereqs next quarter and be missing two GE classes OR finish my GE classes next quarter and finish my major prereqs over the summer or at Berkeley.

The Cal psych path says that major prereqs are not required but encouraged to be competitive. Since I have the summer to complete them, I assume that finishing my GEs this year is more important in this case? I keep reading conflicting opinions. I would call the admissions department today but it is closed on Mondays.

Sorry I meant prereqs! And no, that is VERY wrong info. You do not have to complete UC reciprocity. UCB and my counselors at UCR confirmed this, you DO NOT NEED IT.

“If you still have GE requirements to complete it’s less likely that you’ll graduate within that 2 1/2 years, something that’s becoming more rare even for people with all their GEs and pre-reqs completed going into a UC.”. Nope. UCB L&S adviser told me to complete anything extra (any extra classes I need at UCB, like GE’s) in the summer. I can complete a double major at UCB with summers WITHIN 2 years, so why can’t anyone else complete one major within 2 years? Bull.

And OP, understand that GE’s vary from UC to UC. If you do not complete all your requirements at one UC, you may satisfy anothers. For example, American Cultures requirement is unique to UCB, you cannot usually complete this GE at other UC’s (Just an example, you can with some classes)

OP, your prereqs MUST be completed by the end of fall at UCB for admission into Psyc (with a 3.2). I just talked to a L&S adviser about psyc. Please try to complete your prereqs before you get into berkeley for guaranteed admission into the Psyc major (i recommend it).

This is the email from the L&S adviser at UCB, about my plan to complete psyc pre-reqs within the first semester at UCB. “It appears possible to do this. If you have 3 semesters to finish about 8
Psych major classes, you might be able to fit them in if you can’t the
courses. You can also catch up during the summer. The risk is if you
don’t earn the gpa required for Psych, accumulating a lot of units which
can make it hard to finish another major. I definitely recommend talking
to Psych to make sure this plan will work.”

I understand that GEs vary depending on the UC. Unfortunately, Davis’ GEs are more complicated than Cal’s (it would take me more than a quarter to complete UC reciprocity). I guess I will take my two major prereqs next quarter, and perhaps a GE as well. The fourth class will be my final ochem course of the series. I can always start physics at Davis during summer session if I’m not accepted.

As for completing within 2.5 years, I can’t see that being at all difficult in a B.A. major. My ultimate goal would be to double major in biology and psychology, which still seems doable if I take summer classes, but that is not my primary concern right now.

End of the year summary:
Major prereqs completed
Missing 2/7 L&S breadth requirements
(However, perhaps my two upper divs compensate?)

Does this scenario look as if it will hurt my chances a lot?

Thanks again!

EDIT: I just saw your edits. You are fabulous! I will take my prereqs for sure next quarter then!

ucducb, we have similar goals (UCB and Psyc)!. I have been researching this very intensively. You have an extra year if you decide to double major. And UCB gives you 2 years to complete your BA psyc major, but has no unit limits (if you do only one major). This means you could take as many units as you want each semester. You will def not fall behind, you can just add more units. The advisers are very understanding and can help you a lot with your schedule planning. Check Ninja Courses, it’s amazing and has grade distributions, everything. I already planned out my 2 years.

For UC to UC, major prereqs are the key. Don’t worry about GE’s. The upper divs are an extra bonus. And if you do good on the upper divs, UCB might be impressed ;)

Also, this form is mainly for CC to UC transfers (they are the majority here), I don’t blame anyone if they don’t have the exact answers for UC to UC

I can finally breathe. You have no idea how stressed I’ve been this past week when I heard I might need to complete GEs rather than prereqs!

I have one last question (sorry!). On the supplemental form when it asks how I will complete my breadth requirements, I selected L&S and filled in the short table (reading composition, quantitative reasoning, and foreign language). Is this correct even though I will not finish the seven course breadth requirement? On the TAU form, I am selecting that I will not finish my GEs by the end of spring.

It is so great to have found a fellow UC-UC transfer. I was started to worry that UC psych majors had a different pathway and my plans had been ruined. Best of luck to you and I hope we both receive good news in three months time! I really appreciate all the advice!

Yes I did the exact same thing. On my additional comments, I listed the classes I could not complete for my GE. You don’t have to do the same. I am actually changing up my plans, so I am not taking about 3 of my GE classes at UCR

Good luck to you too! I look forward to the good news of acceptance. The UCB Psychology page is awesome for info, I think you have to click About the Major or something, and it gives you a list of classes you will need to satisfy. I think there are 7 Lower Div, and 7 upper div classes for the major, so it won’t be hard to complete. Try to take Stats if you can at UCD so you can just take Psyc101 (research methods) at UCB. Good Luck again!

Yeah I think I’ve checked every page there is to check. But doing that ended up confusing me even more haha. I should be done all seven major lower division requirements by the end of spring quarter. I took statistics freshman year at UCD because it was required for my research methods class here as well. Hmm I wonder how that will transfer over… I already took research methods but it’s a lower division class here. Well that’s not a big deal anyway.

Thanks so much again! I’m feeling a lot better! I’m also really relieved that I won’t have to take philosophy, history, and international studies all together next quarter…

For anyone else wondering, I called up admissions and verified that completing GEs (or the L&S 7 breadth courses) is not required. Only the L&S reading composition, quantitative reasoning, and foreign language requirement must be completed. Major prerequisites are more important than GEs!

I have one more question… I have three classes for next quarter listed (two of which are my missing major prereqs) but I don’t know exactly which GE class I will be taking. Will I be expected to follow the exact schedule I submit?
