UC Transfer IGETC and GE?

Hey fellow cc'ers

I want to transfer to ucla or berkeley and am currently on this letter's and science requirements:

ASSIST Report: DAC 11-12 UCB GE/Breadth Articulation Agreement

what exactly is the difference between this GE and IGETC pattern? i know the english is a little different, but would the classes from ge breadth work for igetc?

sorry im really lost on this

I can answer this based on what my cc counselor told me. I’m applying to LA and Berkeley as well. Basically, the breadth requirement exists separately from IGETC for students with majors that have a lot of pre-requisites. This allows students to finish their pre-reqs and general education without taking a boatload of bs classes. For the incredibly intensive majors like engineering with a mile and a half of pre-reqs, IGETC isn’t required and they highly recommend that student’s don’t follow it. Correct me if I’m wrong anybody, as I said i’m not entirely sure.

Integrant is correct. Another major that follows the 7-course breadth requirement is Business Administration at Berkeley (Haas).

You have the option to pick between the two options if IGETC is not required for your major. Some majors, like engineering, recommend against IGETC so you would, by default, do the 7-course breadth.

So lets say im thinking of applying to HAAS or UCB Econ should i follow the 7 course breadth requirement?

^ Haas: yes
Econ: yes and no, I think for ECON they also accept the IGETC
btw, 7 breadth course is not an admission requirement for Haas this year anymore, but having them may strengthen your application, I think

I heard about that, thats why im a little reluctant on applying to haas this year because of the competition being a lot tougher this year. Im not sure if i should risk not getting in at all this year :S

you should try… you never know :)

Berkeley engineering has breadth requirements that are different from IGETC and Berkeley L&S 7-course breadth. In particular, at least two upper division humanities and/or social studies courses are required, and at least one of them must be in the same department as some other humanities and/or social studies course. However, the rest of Berkeley engineering breadth can be fulfilled by a year of English writing courses and at least two other 3+ semester unit humanities and/or social studies courses at community college (and you can even try to hit the Berkeley campus American Cultures requirement with one of these as well), so you would only need to take the two upper division humanities and/or social studies courses after transfer.

For majors in Berkeley L&S (including economics), you can fulfill either IGETC or L&S 7-course breadth; for Berkeley Haas, you must fulfill 7-course breadth, which is the same as L&S except that some courses are excluded (mainly business, microeconomics, and macroeconomics courses).

What do you think of applying to Haas this year? much harder to get in for people like me who still have a heavy load of classes to take in the fall & spring?

@berkeleyappeal - if you have all of your major prereqs done, apply this year. The competition is only going to get worse later. Admission evaluation focuses on grades and completion of the major prereqs, as well as the personal statement and supplemental application.

@ucbalumnus - thanks for correcting me! I looked up the requirements on Assist.org and a copy is below:
