It is a busy time for my D so she wants to wait until after the first semester ends to apply for honors. I found this timeline on the Honors College website.
But I also saw this statement.

@STEM2017 @CaucAsianDad
We just got a call from UCF, informing us that they have mailed DS17 his honors application (we hadn’t requested it yet), and to give them a call if we had any questions. (407) 823-2545.
If I remember correctly, they did the same thing (mailed out the application) with my DD14, a few years ago.
@Gator88NE Did they call you on an unsolicited basis? S just got his confirmed acceptance to UCF in the mail this afternoon. How long do you think UCF will notify him of an honors application (assuming UCF is interested)? Thanks.
S also just got accepted to Texas A&M, but it’s a two-stage process. He still has to be considered separately for admission into the Texas A&M Engineering School.
@VABogart It was an unsolicited call (by, I think a current student), and about a week after he was accepted in the portal.
Even if they don’t contact him, he should request an application.
I haven’t spent much attention to TAMU (great school, but a bit too costly for OOS), but I thought you applied for admissions to “general engineering” at the same time as admissions to the school? Then a year later you have to pick 3 choices in majors and hope you get into your first choice. Or is it a three step process, general admissions, then general engineering, and then a year later, to your major (that would s#$%).
Accepted today!

Question: I see that they have two scholarships that waive out of state tuition. Do you guys know how to get that scholarship?
Hello, this is the only appropriate thread I could find but I sent in my application yesterday with SAT scores and the fee and transcript are being send currently. With my stats, can anyone estimate which type of scholarship I might receive? Since I’m guaranteed to UCF with the Top Ten Knight Program

Also, if anyone can clarify the Bright Future SAT score for FAS of 1290 for me because no one can answer whether that score is the old or new SAT, since there would be a gap if it was the new SAT score. I’m kinda worried because if I don’t receive the FAS it might be a financial problem for me.
Thank you.
@senior2k17 The Bright Futures requirements remain the same regardless of which test was taken. I had the same question and called Bright Futures to verify.
You need a 1290 and math/reading SAT–could you try to take one more time?
@Gator88NE Thanks. S was accepted into the UCF Mechanical Engineering Program, and wonders if it’s worth applying to the Burnett Honors College. Is it worth applying if you’re in the Engineering School?
Curious as well. My son is also doing Mechanical Engineering.
I hope scholarship notifications are released soon! Son already received from USF with his acceptance letter. But UCF is first choice.
@oceancruizer UCF is among S’s “first tier” of choices (the other two being Virginia Tech and Texas A&M). A scholarship offer could tip the scales decisively to UCF. (Here’s to hoping! :))

I think it’s worth it (for an engineering student), especially the first two years. As a junior, it may have less value, based on what activities they end up focusing on.
The knock on UCF, is the high student to faculty ratio and limited student resources. An issue at most public universities. The honor’s program helps to mitigate some of those issues.
Likely the most talked about perks are priority term registration and the honor’s housing.
But I think a few underrated advantages should be pointed out. First, additional advising and support, you simply don’t get enough at any public universities, so having someone else to talk with is a boon.
Next, the honor’s program attempts to get the student more involved in campus, It will help push them toward joining groups and seeking leadership positions, finding undergraduate research opportunities and becoming more engaged with smaller classes. You can do all of this without the honor’s program, but it’s a little extra push.
Then you have the extra scholarships and recognition.
I’m sure some students only take advantage of the honors program for a year or two, but others will stay with it to the end (and get the University Honors designation on their Diploma and transcripts).
I think if the student has any interest in the program, it’s worth trying out.
Also waiting for scholarship decisions. I posted this before, but when I called mid-October they said scholarships should start being released end of October/beginning of November. I think it may be this coming week or the week after. Admissions started 2 weeks earlier this year, so scholarships may be released 2 weeks earlier than usual as well. Last year, scholarships were November 17. Can’t wait!
Thanks for checking in. When I emailed long ago, they also told me they would start looking at scholarships mid October so of course I’ve been checking daily! It will be a big load of stress off once they are released!

@ucf2017mom I also called Bright Future and the lady said they’re in the process of changing the numbers and it’ll be released soon but she’s isn’t sure when. And I feel that it’s unfair because a 1290 on the old SAT is drastically different from a 1290 on the new one.
@oceancruizer I already submitted my app for UCF but I just took a school SAT two weeks ago and score isn’t available. Do you think I can still send in that score for Bright Future later on? Since I know that the deadline is in June.
Yes, and if that SAT score is not good enough you can take it again in spring.
