UCF- no response

Sweatheartcroc, I have one question for you, what year did you graduate from UF in? Collegeboard compares the mid level stats of the colleges just the same as that form you had does? What are using off that form to compare them?

Just saw on another post you go to FSU…for computer science…you do know that UCF has a better computer science program than FSU right?

Maybe you should transfer ;)

From the USNews Computer Science Rankings (http://grad-schools.usnews.rankingsandreviews.com/best-graduate-schools/top-science-schools/computer-science-rankings</a>).

FSU: #79
UCF: #91

Sweetheartcroc-I’m also using personal experiance, as well. I know many individuals who applied to both UCF and FSU, and the vast majority of them who were rejected/deferred from UCF gained acceptence at FSU. The time of UCF simply being an easy school to gain acceptence into is no longer here. I continue to hear praise of UCF up here in Chicago, and hear the occasional word of UF, but can openly admit that I have not heard one thing about FSU. That does not mean it’s a bad school-the opposite, it’s great! But based upon the experiance of watching friends get denied, deffered from UCF, and right away accepted into FSU shows that UCF is getting much more competitive, and more so then FSU, I believe.

Papertiger-I would have done the SAME thing that the admissions officer did. That made me burst out laughing!

I can’t dispute your anecdotes, WRITEfluidity, but they likely based on only a handful of people that you happen to know. The statistics are based on the entire admitted classes and are more credible.

That’s graduate? Are you graduate or undergrad? FSUs grad program may be better, I’ll give you this one :)

Statistics don’t often prove everything, though. I really wish people would stop assuming that certain schools are better, simply because of ranking. Especially with UF-good school, but amazing and best in Florida? Highly debatable.

I checked it even shows that ranking for undergrad as well.

UCF is a newer Uni and for certain majors it is an excellent school.

Agreed-also, considering how long it’s been around, it’s doing amazing. It’s take so many years for other Florida schools to make a name for themselves, and I’m so impressed how quickly UCF did so.

The 1850s date of founding for FSU and UF is a polite fiction that is perpetuated by alumni of both schools. The reality is that UF did not become a “real” university until around 1900 and FSU did not become one until after WW2.

“Statistics don’t often prove everything, though. I really wish people would stop assuming that certain schools are better, simply because of ranking. Especially with UF-good school, but amazing and best in Florida? Highly debatable.”

I totally agree. However, to be fair, you are the one that was making the bold claims about the selectivity of UCF.

WRITE, I am also referring to my personal experiences* (I’m sorry, but that spelling error was driving me insane lol). Being a resident of the state of Florida, I have applied to both UCF and FSU and know many people who have done the very same. In my situation I have been accepted into UCF and deferred from FSU. Everyone else at my school seemed to have also gain admission into UCF with no problem whatsoever. It seems to be the “back-up” school that everyone gets into. I do not know one single person who has been denied/deferred from UCF and admitted into FSU; its usually the opposite. The University of Central Florida is the second largest University in the nation for a reason, and it most certainly isn’t because they’re known for denying people admission.

In most cases, statistics do prove a lot of things and certainly prove much more than the small handful of people you know up in Illinois. Most schools are ranked higher because they truly are better in that area or subject. Rankings aren’t just given out to these schools because people like their name (Well, most of the time at least…). There are actual statistics and facts behind the number of these ranks. Also, UF may not be the most “amazing and best school in Florida.” I would happily say that UM surpasses UF. However, if you are suggesting that UCF is an all-around better school than UF, then there is surely something wrong… As a matter of fact, most statistics and college rankings show that even Florida State is a better school than UCF!

I don’t mean to be rude, but I greatly disagree with some of your posts and cannot help but see the biased position you’re posting from. I understand that you are a future Knight (I may be too!) and would like to praise the University of Central Florida in any way possible, but just because you see it as the #1 most awesome and fantastic school in Florida doesn’t mean it actually is…

“Everyone else at my school seemed to have also gain admission into UCF with no problem whatsoever.”
yea same at my school… UCF is kinda known as the backup school

I will openly admit that I do have a biased view point on it. I love UCF, can’t wait to become a future knight, so It’s difficult for me to lock that down. It really isn’t a matter of me trying to say, ‘This school is better then this school.’ The point I want to get across, and feel I wandered off from, was the matter of not looking at it in a fair way. All of these colleges are amazing, as each offers individuals aspects that another may not. However, each have a few negative things that factor into the debate. What I just want to prove/show, is that UCF deserves just as much respect as these other colleges (Particulars UF and FSU, in this case). I feel as though people just look at is as a safety school, but I don’t see it that way. With the average incoming stats this year of a 27 ACT and 3.9 GPA, I believe they rightfully earned the title of being a competitive college in Florida, and ready to compete with such schools as UF and FSU. I just wish the respect we had for UCF up here in the north (Chicago) could be brought down to the Florida area. It isn’t simply a safety school anymore, or a last resort. It deserves to be a competitor.

Write, all I can say is that only time will tell. UCF is a fairly new school compared to other public universities in Florida and to be in the current standing that we are in is really something to be proud of. I remember two years ago when I applied to this school and people were looking down on it even more so than they are now and it’s gotten that much more competitive during the two year time-frame. And honestly, being in Orlando, the word ‘opportunity’ is virtually limitless. That’s something I can say without hesitation. UCF helps so much in getting internships and getting connected with potential employers and that’s vital in having a successful college career. I can honestly say I’ve never once regretted my decision to attend this school, whether it be two years ago, presently, or in the future.

Just saying that when I was in Chicago over winter break, I saw plenty of UCF flags flying outside of some bars.
