Currently a high school junior, about to enter my senior year and really want to open up my options and ideas to colleges. Trying to stay within California because I don’t want to pay huge expenses to travel out of state. However, I heard UCF offers good OOS waivers? Not quite sure about that. I would like to pursue nursing and i noticed they have a nursing program. Would someone be able to tell me my chances at getting in as an OOS/the financial help I would receive & how much I might be paying a year?
MY STATS:
SAT: -not going to submit because was not as good as I was expecting
ACT: 28 (~1870-1910) (Planning to retake in a week or two)
UW GPA: 3.95/7?
Weighted GPA: 4.3 more or less (Freshman up until Junior year)
10th gr yr: Bio H, Adv. Alg H, Chinese, Phys Ed., 10th Eng, AP World History:
11th gr yr: Astro, Chem, USH H, American lit H, Precal, Chinese
12th gr yr SCHED (not yet taken): AP Bio, AP Calc, Eng Lit, American Democ, Env science, last period still unscheduled (my school has very limited APs and availability for spaces)
HELP: would a free period my senior year look super bad?
E.C: worked since 14 (3 jobs/internships), volunteered 125+ hours, Basketball sports manager, HS Girls volleyball team (3+ years, 2 years = Captain), Scholarship federation member (3 years) , Dance committee president (1 year) and member (2 and a half years) , photography club (1 year) dragonboat (2 years)
Please let me know on what I’d need to improve on, what looks good and any advice would help. Thank you!
UCF OOS waivers are need based for academically talented students. You definitely qualify for the second half of that statement. FYI: Florida has a standardized method of calculating weighted GPA, they do not just look at the number on the transcript.
The federally reported “cost of attendance” for in-state students is ~$22,000. However, if you have sufficient need to qualify for OOS waiver, you probably will receive additional FA.
Thank you @NotForEveryone Any chance you could help me figure out how the GPA Calculator for UCF works? Also, having 2 parents who work and annual income about $80,000-85,000 before taxes of ($15,000) with one other child in college by Falll 2016 would that suffice to AT LEAST qualify for low income/need based? Thanks so much for the info!
As someone who received an OOS scholarship, I’d say you have a good chance of getting one. I definitely think they look more at merit than need for OOS students, and your stats are similar to what mine were when I applied. Just make sure you apply early! Admissions are rolling and scholarships are first come first serve, so the earlier you apply the better.
@jonnyg1 If you don’t mind sharing, how much are you having to pay for next year/how much in grants/scholarships/loans did you get/have to take out? Etc? Also, do you know when the early admission period is if i were to apply for Fall 2016? I can’t quite find it on the site. Thanks!
@kk1234 My tuition for this year will be little around $11,500. My scholarship is for 11k, so it covers just about half of my tuition (This is for 15 credits). I was also offered around $3000 in loans from the school, some of which was subsidized and some of which was not.
As far as early admission, I believe the only form of it they have is dual enrollment during your senior year. But if you apply early, it shouldn’t take long for you get a decision. I applied in the middle of September, and got accepted less than two weeks later. They start awarding scholarships in November, so definitely apply by then.
@jonnyg1 I don’t think i’ll be doing dual enrollment my senior year because I am OOS on the west coast. Also, as an OOS yourself, how come your tuition is significantly lower than what UCF states for OOS tuition? They claim its around 30-33k for an OOS their first year. Thanks so much for the info & replying by the way
