UChicago 2021 Applicant Thread

lol new thread at my place come party and by party I mean cry because we’re on the waitlist

Anyone know when/how we see our financial aid awards?

@nikhil99 Michigan Ross for sure.

Received my fin aid / big acceptance envelope on Monday. It was beyond generous.

D17 (admitted EDII) was given a financial aid offer based on the 2016-17 numbers. Today she received her revised offer based on the current 2017-18 numbers and the net cost is unchanged! Hallelujah!

Same for us.

Received the 2016-17 numbers previously and the 2017-18 were uploaded today. UChicago was even more generous, keeping the net cost the same. No complaints here and family is excited to visit in a few weeks.

What do you mean by 2016-2017 numbers and then updated with 2017-2018 – your FAFSA would have been based on your 2015 numbers? I’m trying to understand the process and S did not receive anything that could be characterized as generous from UChicago.

@CollegeParent123 ED/EA/EDII accepted students had awards based off of the 2016/17 costs. The updated 2017/18 costs were released along with the subsequent FA packages.

By generous, I believe the majority of people, along with myself, mean the net cost is lower than the estimated/net price calculator.

Good luck.

When everyone is speaking about aid is this strictly need based or has anyone received merit based? I am hearing UChciago isn’t as generous with merit based as we thought? Curious to know. We’ve asked for reconsideration so we will see? S has a full ride plus to another top school and we are trying to weigh our options.

@Warrenless - need based in our case. Good luck to your son!

S may not have received financial aid from UChicago but maybe the nice scarf he received today in the mail will suffice?

Hello everyone! My daughter is thrilled to be accepted to UChicago. She loves the school, people and everything about UChicago. She was also accepted to Georgetown SFS and loves that school as well and now is really torn between the two. If anyone has any thoughts between the two schools it would be greatly appreciated. Are there many opportunities to study abroad and become fluent in a language at UChicago? Do you think the job opportunities for economics/political science are comparable after graduation?

@SaltH20 First and foremost, congratulations. You must be extremely proud. A few of the main reasons my son picked UChicago over other schools was the strength of the economics program as well as the study abroad/internships.

UChicago actually pays the student should they engage in non-paid internship or study abroads. From the students we have spoken to, they have all told us it is encouraged.

I believe there are joint and specialization degrees between Econ and Public Policy

I’m sure if you start a new thread, I’m sure you will get a good deal of helpful information.

@SaltH20 Congratulations! These are two phenomenal choices. They are also very different. FSF is a very focused pre-professional program, probably the best of its kind for an undergraduate. UChicago provides an elite broad education with numerous amazing specialization, travel and language options. UChicago in business and economics is the absolute top of the top. But in international affairs I give FSF a clear edge. So if your D wants a foreign service / diplomacy career, go to Georgetown. If she wants a broader education with more nuance and likely wishes to pursue business/economics , UChicago is the place. Moreover, UChicago as an overall university has much higher pedigree value, and you never value when that comes into play. .

@Chrchill and @fbsdreams thank you for the excellent advice!

At the risk of stating the obvious, the culture and location of the two schools are very different. I would research more the non-academic factors and get a sense that way. One is Hyde Park, the other an affluent part of DC.

@theloniusmonk thank you, you are right. However, we have moved alot… And, I think the end result is my kids are cognizant of a city’s strengths but have learned when you move it is the people, the memories that you couldn’t have predicted from unexpected experiences and discovered places that now make the “city” a beloved place. She could be happy in either Chicago or DC. We have been happiest in some of the most unremarkable cities. She is currently quite impressed with the UChicago meme page…and believes it might be a clue to the amazing community at UChicago.

@SaltH20 Please, please, please, please, please do not make any important decisions about colleges off of meme pages.

Please.
