UChicago Class of 2020 Applicant Thread

I never got any email! I did apply for FA. Hope that means it’s alright.

@dr0wning Not sure if this is the same, but Columbia dislikes NY State people. I actually think that the intense competition for Columbia from NY State was among the reasons for my deferral. Idk if that rule applies everywhere.

does UC reject anyone? reading through last years threads it seems as though getting deferred does not make you any more special than rejects…6 days 19 hours east coast

@dr0wning - thanks. My hope is pined on my essays and recos. GPA is 3.8 and ACT-34 (decent)

@hope1938 I think Uchicago has a notorious reputation for a lot of deferral. They just love to defer many students, even well-qualified ones, to RD round, and then perhaps waitlists. I guess if that is due to the high volume of applications and they can’t read thoroughly everyone’s.

According to my school’s Naviance, they defer the majority of early applicants… only a few people in the last five years were outright rejected.

@tutututututuru No need to worry :slight_smile: If you have uploaded every required documents, you should be fine.

i applied for FA and freaked out about a week ago because it hadn’t been turned in X_X
@alpha525 I heard that’s true for Rice and TX residents as well, because they want greater geographic diversity. But it def doesn’t apply everywhere, UChicago has made it clear that they want to help Chicago residents :slight_smile:
@hope1938 I read those threads as well, it seems that they reject very few applicants and deferral is basically rejection. However, there is hope. Supposedly the acceptance rate for deferred applicants is 2-3% or 3-4% (I forgot, but someone posted that in a applicant discussion thread from another year), if you’ve waited sisi liu’s college decisions video she was deferred then accepted!
@shivaya hah, I have similar GPA/test scores! do you know of anyone here that would read over essays?

Im low key not getting in as I have a 3.8 W Gpa and 2060 SATs. However my essays were stellar (literally in my opinion the best thing I’ve ever written) and I’ve only taken honors and AP classes (as of this year, 10 APs, and Ive only scored 4s and 5s on previous ones). Also, my W GPA is upward trend which may help… I really would be humbled and honored to get in, but tbh its such a super-reach.

SAT 2170 UW GPA 4.0...Honestly, is the SAT too low? I'm just psyching myself out at this point

not meaning to sound pretentious or offensive, its just that the other threads show kids with 2300s not getting in

@actssmart does “honors” even mean anything to colleges since it’s not a standardized program, and can vary wildly in difficulty?
I’ll root for you next Friday :slight_smile: You have a chance!

omg i love you @dr0wning you’re the best.

and all honors means is that it is weighted by .5, but it means nothing as an institution.

Guys, holy crap. HOW DO YOU CALCULATE UNWEIGHTED GPA!!! I have 1 B+ my entire HS career and then A, A+, A- the rest. Is that like 3.9+? People be coming to CC with different ass scales and it pisses me off so much.

@hope1938 Well mine is lower and I haven’t lost all hope. From what I’ve heard perfect SAT scores don’t mean much as they see so many. Also from a well-connected source I’ve heard many top schools will be taking a step away from standardized testing in the near future, and Chicago is in on those discussions.

Is anyone else still waiting for ED decisions? I think there are still a few top colleges that have not released decisions yet.

@actssmart love you too :-*
so does honors even look good? I’ve never considered it since only one honors class I’ve ever taken has been weighted
@hope1938 stats aren’t everything, as you can see form post #695 essays are the most important

@alpha525 my school doesn’t do +/-, but from what I know a + is +.3, and - is -.3. So an A- is 3.7, and a B+ is 3.3. I think.

Chicago doesn’t care much about gpa either.

essays are super important! just which type, that is the question

@CoolGurl101 From what I’ve heard generally WhyChicago, Extended, Common/Optional but that is entirely subjective, but thats what my regional counselor said anyway
