UChicago Class of 2023 Applicants

Just curious, who is sending the optional video? Do you think it’s OK not to send it, or a bad idea?

My son will be sending in a supplemental video, but he was planning to do that anyway - and will send it to all his schools that allow or encourage those supplements.

I sending an optional video as well also documents of research papers and poetry

Is any SAT taker for October 2018 still expecting scores? Everyone that took in my centre hasn’t received yet.

@Tspice they were trickling out yesterday!! S19 finally got his subject test results late afternoon. Not sure what the holdup was but there was some chatter about it on the SAT threads.

Are any of you recruited athletes? Anyone receive their “likely letters” yet for the class of 2023?

Why UChicago: Basically I use references from the 1960 play Camelot and compare UChicago to Camelot. Reasons for going there: research opportunities, student life, and extracurriculars.
Honestly, for everyone applying it is a gamble to get in because it has a very low acceptance rate, so make sure you have backups, but don’t get too discouraged from applying there, you will never know until you try. UChicago is the only elite institution that realizes not everyone is perfect so that is why they made that test-optional policy. You are all incredible human beings so don’t be afraid. @Ohhoneyyy, I know a guy who has a 3.47 GPA with 1440 SAT score, 8 APs, and 3 extracurriculars and still got in. So don’t get discouraged.
Chance me you guys

How long did your “Why” essay turn out? I’m wondering if it would be bad to go over the count of 250-500 words.

My essay might be about near 500. @phoeniz I think it is just a suggestion but I will stick to 200-500 because admissions officers don’t want to read that many words. If you have a little bit over 500 words that is fine but you don’t want to have like 700 words.

I submitted my application but I forgot a word in my whyUchicago essay making one sentence weird would they take points off.
here is the essay:
In 1833, on the great plains of Illinois, there rose a great city. This city is the workhorse of what makes Illinois a good place to live; this city’s name is Chicago. This city produced so many things: Michael Jordan, Chicago’s deep dish pizza, and its exciting architecture. However, there lies a mysterious kingdom enshrouded by this powerful city. This kingdom has many names: the place where the fun comes to die, Universitas Chicaginiensis, and the place devoted to the life of the mind. However, I called this place, Chicago’s Camelot; this place is the University of Chicago. I have heard many tales of this kingdom: its impressive caliber of Nobel Prize Winners; its exciting scavenger hunt; and its versatile library, The Reg, which doubles as a social hangout. However, my interest in this kingdom lies in its research opportunities, extracurriculars and the Core Curriculum in this kingdom.

In the future, I want to pursue a career in neurosurgery research and in this career, I want to find out why our brains work the way they do. With this understanding, I want to find treatments and cures to neurological disorders and diseases like Autism or Parkinson’s disease. The University of Chicago has a variety of research opportunities that will allow me to explore the unknown, especially in neuroscience. For example, there is the Neuroscience Research Metcalf Internship where I could conduct my own research for 10 weeks in the summer.

At the University of Chicago, there is a variety of student groups and activities that I could join that will meet my interests. There is a gospel music group that I really want to join called the University of Chicago Soul Umoja, and they usually sing at church services, charity events, and holiday services. I love gospel and Christian music and I want to continue singing Christian music even after I leave my own church community. Also, I would like to start a Marvel Comics and Movies Enthusiasts club, where we could discuss different elements and theories about the comics and the movies. With the experience of running a startup club before, I could lead this club effectively so it could be a good addition to the University of Chicago. Also with the resources from the university, it will be easier to create this club.

I think one of the most important aspects of the University of Chicago is the Core Curriculum.
The Core Curriculum will definitely satisfy my desire for intellectual inquiry. It will allow me to broaden my horizons to different subjects other than my major. Even though I am an intended neuroscience major, I am also interested in politics. I have always wondered why politics is based on Machiavellian principle rather than moral principle. I want to further explore this theory and politics to a greater extent and the Core Curriculum will to do so.

“Don’t let be forgot, that once there was spot, for one brief shining moment that is known as Chicago’s Camelot.”

Would they take points off for errors

Guessing from past years that it’ll be December 17th? Or the 14th? What do folks think for ED decision release?

Is UChicago going to, prior to Dec. 15th, send out “likely letter” to admitted applicants just like many other colleges do?

Yes

What does a likely letter of admittance look like

Hey guys I’m new to this discussion, but anyone doing Prompt 5 for the supplemental essay?

Does anyone know what date UChicago will start sending likely letters and what date they might release the official decision?

Likely letters seem … unlikely. I mean, decisions will be happening “Mid-December”, which by my reckoning is either Friday the 14th or Monday the 17th. Who needs to know before then? That’s only a 5 weeks away.

Likely letters for athletics are typically sent out prior to the decision date. For any other talent, if you applied ED1 there is probably little if any need to be receiving a likely letter. EA - another story.
