Uchicago Deferred Applicants Class of 2020

For all the applicants like myself who received deferral.

How many applicants are actually deferred? A thread on here said somewhere around 55% of applicants get deferred. Can anyone confirm please?

They don’t release any data on EA statistics unfortunately. Did Penn work out for you?

Guess it’s time for us to knuckle down and continue on! This is just the battle of the Wilderness. We can turn this around into a federal victory yet. Press onwards, don’t give up! We can still go to our dream school.

(Sorry for the Civil War analogies).

@Trickster2212 I got deferred :/.

Deferred too- anyone planning on sending an email?

Deferred too- anyone planning on sending an email?

@Sherlockian101 If you consider UChicago to be a main choice sending a letter expressing continued interest will definitely be in your best interests.

I’ve sent them an email. I’m wondering if deferred students can sign up for an interview, or is it too late?

I read somewhere that UChicago only defers people instead of rejecting them, does anyone know if that is true?

No. They defer more students than they reject, as do many peer institutions, but some students do get rejected. In all likelihood, they just don’t feel like telling the world here on CC.

Hi fellows. I sure hope that this ends up being Wilderness instead of Bull Run, @whatisalie.

I haven’t seen one single applicant rejected. No one gets rejected from EA at UChicago?

@DominicBayer We can only hope. But it depends on the Bull Run you’re referring to – we have plenty of combat experience at this point with applications, so it can’t be the first one. Second Bull Run though… Potentially. But let’s move onwards, and hope to avoid any Craters if we lay siege.

@kittymom1102 They do reject people EA from UChicago.

@whatisalie. It most certainly would be Bull Run, as I don’t believe we’re stupid enough to blow our chances of victory like they did at the Crater. Let’s just hope and pray it’s an Antietam, full of suffering but a victory at the end.

@DominicBayer But could we really afford the casualties of an Antietam? Perhaps it would be best to hope for a Vicksburg – a nice, decisive victory that opens up opportunities for us.

@whatisalie. Yeah, Vicksburg would be cool. But that would have happened if we had been accepted EA. That’s why I hope that this will be like Chattanooga: we rally and win a victory after an initial defeat (Chickamauga).

Hi all,
Deferred applicant here as well. Do you guys know of any other good ways to tell the admissions officers more about yourself. I’ve already sent an email expressing that Uchicago is still my top school and was wondering about what, if anything else, I can do.

At this point, not much. Hope for the best, but don’t get too invested in the outcome of this one application. Any competitive applicant to UChicago is easily capable of doing well at whatever university he/she eventually attends - have confidence that the same is true of you. To quote Frank Bruni, “Where you go is not who you’ll be.”

For what it’s worth, I’m Class of 2019 and was deferred early action. I sent an email to my regional counselor and had an on-campus interview before RD results came out. Ultimately, I was accepted.
