UChicago EA Applicants 2018

anyone watch modern family?

@platypigirl12 we all share the same fears. i think it’s kind of liberating to acknowledge the fact that a 90% rejection rate means we’re all crazy and brave enough to even apply. that means we have high aspirations, which will carry us far in life. think positive!

if i get nothing else out of this experience, i’ll know that i don’t regret a thing because i gave it my all, and i allowed myself to be open to rejection.

@futuredoc sheldon is the best :)

Ikr!!! Lol i want to be Mrs.Sheldon Cooper. @enoughnerve

i actually find sheldon’s egotism off-putting now, instead of humorous

(sorry for posting so much…i’m trying to write a hamlet paper at 1 am on 2 hours of sleep and it is NOT going well)

I think I love Tom more than any university. lol. Have you seen the interview he gave about being romantic in university (which, by the way, was Cambridge, with a double firsts)? He ditched a make-or-break audition to surprise his girlfriend in the Luxembourg Gardens in Paris. Where he of course spoke French. Because he speaks 5 or 6 languages. I will have to go in search of the Chris Evans impression (I plan, when I find the time, to watch many of his). Have you seen Thor 2? I ask because I don’t want to spoil a little Chris Evans-related gem that was in there, that was apparently Tom’s idea. A lot of the movie (like say, the general plot line and a lot of character development) was apparently Tom’s idea.

i’m not surprised that Tom though of the captain america cameo, since he’s so good at doing impressions. and yes!! i’ve seen that vid of him explaining his romantic dalliances while at cambridge (cue dreamy sigh). it just seems like from the video that he regretted skipping the audition as he says he could be in a very different place now in his career if he hadn’t…

what languages does he speak? french, spanish, english, (portugese? not italian…)

but i totes heart thor 2 with all my might! i doubt that the plot line was mainly tom’s idea…the writers may have taken inspiration from his brilliant, in-depth portrayal of loki, but i don’t think he influenced the movie THAT much

Omg im reading Hamlet in school right now to. Except we are not doing papers we have to act out each scene and my teacher grade us pretty harshly. @neon

I read that he apparently suggested that Thor and Loki team up, plus in re-shoots he suggested the twist ending, remedying the fact that Loki and Odin originally had no scenes together, and he suggested the Captain America cameo (he apparently showed up on set in the suit, claiming it was his one chance to try it on). I haven’t seen the video, but I have seen the text, where it came off more as pondering than regret. He always says he’s ecstatic about his career and so happy. And he speaks English, French, Spanish, some Greek, some Italian, and though you don’t really speak it anymore, Latin. And Thor 2 was great. So much snarky Loki, and the score was fantastic. I’m a sucker for epic movie music.

@futuredoc504 lol my lit teacher is crazy. we simultaneously write papers for the book we finished reading a week ago, while reading ~50 pages a night of our current book (wuthering heights), and writing 4 quote analyses a night as well…in addition to a long-term reading assignment and project.

so yea…feeling pretty stressed from only one class -_______-

i don’t even know how to write anymore. i’m already approaching 7 pages and only a little over half way done. brevity has never been my strength.

@impressionistic my film scores pandora station is my go-to essay writing mood music. except tonight. tonight i’m listening to “99 songs to make your homework awesome” on 8tracks. the title is quite accurate. from a vid i saw, he apparently knows very little italian (he sang volare to prove the extent of his italian knowledge)…not sure about the greek, but i would listen to the man read a dictionary so i would love to hear some lovely greek words murmured from his lips.

so much love.

I think he probably knows more Italian than he let on in that interview, because he’s A) fluent in Spanish, and it’s so similar to Italian and B) so humble he probably didn’t want to seem like he was bragging in the interview. Either way, he’s ridiculously intelligent.

Are you partial to a particular film music company? I really love Audiomachine.

I just finished Hamlet a couple weeks ago and I’m currently reviewing it for my IB oral, so I’m in the same boat as you guys.

Oh gosh thats horrible. I no longer think my teacher is crazy lol I read wuthering heights two years ago and I hated it. We just finished reading Jane Erye and had to write an analysis. Lets just say Me and British Lit do not get along well lol

have you seen his performances in the hollow crown? especially as henry V. he absolutely shines, and i’m fairly certain it’s the culmination of his acting brilliance and RADA training. so so sooooo good. umphhh

I haven’t and it’s KILLING me. It’s not on Netflix. Maybe BBC America will air it. So far I’ve only seen Youtube excerpts, though, as a result. Luckily, I saw the ten minute scene where he convinces Katherine to marry him before Youtube removed it. I’m dying that I can’t just pop over to London and see Coriolanus right now. It’s crazy to me how many British actors are highly educated, usually at Oxbridge, and then go on to places like RADA. It’s so different than the US.

if i ever meet tom in person, i don’t know if i’d fall over in shock and amazement or just stare dumbfounded before babbling stupidly to him

but yes, i am SO excited to see the finished product for corialanus…all that sword fighting

I honestly don’t know what I would do. I would like to think I would remain calm and rational and respect his space as a person. Most likely, I would stare dumbfounded and make a complete and utter fool of myself.

Anyways, I apologize to everyone else on this thread for hijacking it and making it a conversation about Tom Hiddleston. But, at least we managed to pass another day without a decision! :)

Haha @impressionistic its ok, I feel the same way about Bruce Springsteen, even though he’s 64 and I’m not even from Jersey!

I am so impatient now I can hardly focus on anything else… I also applied Columbia ED (no way I’m getting in) and I am stressed to say the least! What do you guys do to relax? I try and run, but there’s so much snow and ice I just go sledding instead  Also, this sounds super old school but I’m a huge vinyl record fan so I’m bringing out my record player and we can all have a virtual dance party/grief session upon decision releases!

@angelexia you sound like an awesome person. I love vinyl records! I’m not quite sure where my fascination with them has stemmed from, but there are only a few people I know who own an actual record player. I live in AZ so I run to relax. I also have anxiety problems where I’m always worrying about the tinniest things but it has worked to my advantage this week! Whenever I start to think “oh hell, what am I thinking, I didn’t get in…” I think of all the tiny reasons that I may have gotten in. There’s also this quote that’s been stuck in my head: “Don’t worry, if it’s suppose to happen it will”. Oddly enough, the quote WORKS. Everyone is different. Find something that calms you (maybe an instrument, book, writing etc.) and pursue it. Also, don’t be too hard on yourself with Columbia. You never know(;
