UChicago EA Applicants 2019

@Awflapjackz‌ I also didn’t sign up for an interview and I’m kinda worried about that! And I am completely undecided. I don’t even know yet if I prefer humanities or sciences, and I’m very into art.

@wethemusicmakers oh eh did you submit an art supplement? :)

@Awflapjackz‌ I put molecular engineering as my major too! I really haven’t heard of anyone else applying to it (I mean, I’m sure a ton of people did)… So I’m hoping that maybe since it’s their first year offering it as an undergrad major, maybe that will help us out a little bit.

@awh671‌

Cone photoreceptors are the things in your eye that allow you to view color. That’s not a stupid question, either.

Good luck to all!

@wethemusicmakers‌ Hopefully we’ll be okay!

@alleycat2‌ Do you think it will make a difference? I thought that the major choices were just for them to get a grasp of your interests. It sounds really appealing to me! I didn’t elaborate much on it in my essay, but it sounds so cool. I’m applying for ChemE everywhere else, but I feel like molecular engineering is a better fit for me. I didn’t know anyone else was interested in it!

@Awflapjacks Honestly, I have convinced myself that it will make a difference. UChicago isn’t known as an engineering school, and I doubt that many prospective engineering students considered UChicago over MIT, Rensselaer, Berkeley, etc., let alone knew that the program existed. And I’m pretty sure that they do consider your program area because they have to have a certain level of enrollment for each major. Like they can’t admit 300 economics majors even if they are all outstanding students because there just isn’t enough space… LOL maybe it won’t help at all but I just keep telling myself that it will

@alleycat2‌ I think those are valid points! That would be really nice if our interest worked in our favor. It seems like the program has some top-notch faculty too. Maybe we’ll be majoring in molecular engineering together :-D

@Awflapjackz‌ I know their faculty is great (and they have like the coolest building ever haha)! And that would be SO cool! I’ll just keep crossing my fingers lol

@weepingmermaid‌ yes I did submit an arts supplement!

@hugzUC‌ wasn’t one of the extended essay options a few years ago about rainbow mantis shrimp and their 16 cone photoreceptors?

@Fuzzypeaches22 my D did the one on untranslatable words…she’s a borderline candidate on stats…but i truly felt she killed it on that essay…so we shall see… :slight_smile:

Do you guys think that decisions will be later than normal?

@Awflapjackz I hope not! I’ll lose my mind if we have to wait any longer!

@awh671 SAME but I feel like they will since they extended the deadline by two weeks rather than just a few days

@Awflapjackz‌ @awh671‌ From UChicago Tumblr:
“So since the EA deadline was extended to November 15, does that mean that the day we find out if we’ve been accepted or not has been pushed back, too?”
UChicago: Nope! We still plan to be able to release decisions on our normal timeline; we don’t have a firm date yet, but expect decisions will be released in mid-December.

@alleycat2‌ ah sweet thanks so much! Though I’ll probably never be ready for decision day anyway heh

@wethemusicmakers that’s sweet haha me too :D

@wethemusicmakers‌

Yeah, there was one like that. However, mine is different in the sense that it places you, the writer, in the position of a cone photoreceptor, telling you to describe your own perception of color.

I did the list of three essay and talked about three different things that engaged three different senses and how they relate to brain activity as a whole. I want to study neuroscience :slight_smile: I also shadowed a neurologist at UChicago Medical Center and he’s writing me a recommendation letter! Hope it helps!

@hugzUC‌ oh cool, how interesting!
@weepingmermaid‌ cool! what kind of art do you do, like drawing/painting?
