UChicago EA/ED Class of 2021

trying to steel myself for bad news sigh

here’s a bad pun for you fellow hopefuls who may be nervous like me:

a new broom came out, it’s sweeping the nation :stuck_out_tongue:

I’m expecting bad news for myself :frowning: but you never know tbh. I have 2 EA schools so hopefully the other works out, as UChicago is definitely more of a reach for me.

I’m nervous- my ECs were great, my grades are high and I took a lot of AP/honors classes and got 5s on AP exams, and the essays were some of the best I’ve ever written and emphasized by passion for history- but I got a 33 on the act, mainly because I’m TERRIBLE at math, and that brought my score down a lot. Math is honestly the reason I got nm commended and not semifinalist. I’ve heard that score is a bit low for Chicago. Idk- I’m nervous and I want this so badly!

@smartspencer 33 is not low for Chicago!.. or anywhere!

Yea @smartspencer a 33 is perfectly fine. UChicago makes it very clear too that their process is holistic.

@smartspencer A 99th percentile test score is nothing to fret. You will come across as you’ve dubbed yourself (smart)

is it true that EA applicants usually don’t stand a chance because ED carries so much more weight?

@apzsfo No. If EA applicants don’t stand a chance, why would there even be an EA option? Why would there e students taken in the EA round? Of course, ED applicants are a little more attractive!

@apzsfo @kingrex16 is spot on. I think it’s fair to assume EA applicants (like myself) would fair better admissions-wise had we applied ED. But they understand that we may just not be financially able to commit to UChicago and clearly have interest, so I would expect noticeable (but not vastly) different acceptance rates for EA and ED. Then again, what do I know

yikes i did ea to chicago too

@apzsfo I think everyone is “yikes” because even ED applicants still have low odds. Don’t stress it too much. The only thing bugging me is that I don’t know when they’ll release decisions. Lol I misused “fair” above

I know the conversation has moved past the button, but I do have it and I applied early action.

@smartspencer I’m in the exact same boat as you on all of that. would have been 35 on the ACT without math, but I got a 28 on math so that pulled me down. Don’t worry, though. We’re still in the middle 50, and from what I hear from AOs, that’s al that matters.

@ljnsdkflx @smartspencer
Same here! Had 34 & 35 in the other sections except math… where I had a 27. But I did get that 115 TOEFL so I hope that helps me.

@AllyssXx @smartspencer I think we’ll be fine. Let’s just hope we hear back from them this week.

my problem is the science section. got 35/36 on all others but only a 31 on science…I’m hoping my supplement will prove to them I do think logically…

@apzsfo No reason to feel “yikes” about it! Everything will work out just fine. Good luck to everybody!

Dudes - you should be worrying less about one “bad” score on an otherwise fine ACT, and more about your essays. That’s where UChicago will be fine-tuning their decisions.

Still no decision date? I am guessing it will be Dec 18, but who knows
