http://www.thedp.com/article/2016/12/early-decision-release yeah it was 22%
@smartspencer last year deferral meant a low chance of getting in. Low single digits from what I recall. All deferrals entered the RD pool and within the RD pool there was a ridiculously low acceptance rate. Somewhere around here are all the stats, if you dig a little you can probably find them.
do you guys think it will help if your chances if you change a deferral from EA to ED II??
Yes it might, but you should only change if Uchicago has now become your absolute first choice.
Yeah. I remember talking to the U of C college consoler for my area about deferrals. She pretty much told us that if you get deferred, it’s most likely a no. There’s also a low chance of getting deferred as well because if they didn’t accept you in the first place, why would they look back and change their mind.
Also we asked if kids applying ED will have a higher chance getting in than EA students, but they told me no since this would be the first time they would be doing ED. Wouldn’t hurt to try though. Might change my app to ED II as well.
so is there no difference between ea or ed 2? same chances?
I don’t think Chicago would be that stupid. If they don’t have a higher acceptance rate for ED (assuming the same student quality for ED and EA), then it will kill their ED program right when it started.
Last year the dean of admissions stated during an accepted students trip that the acceptance rate for deferred applicants was 1%.
@hirraine I highly doubt that the ED rate would be the same as the EA rate.
Honestly though, if the ED rate and EA rate are the same, no one would apply ED next year
Yeah, I think ED would be higher
Girls in my school have gotten into Cornell, Northwestern, and Duke ED. I want my decision. I feel like such an underachiever.
Do NOT feel like an underachiever! @smartspencer The fact that you are even taking the time to post on CC indicates that you care about education and have done well and worked hard. We will all know very soon!
slightly unrelated question: what do the financial aid offices of need-blind schools do before decisions are made? Of course they are busy doing their typical work, but do they even touch a student’s financial aid app/file if the student is not accepted?
It would seem so. If a student is not admitted and their finances were not taken into account, it would be unnecessary for the FA office to look at their file. Just seeing if anyone has an opinion!
With need-blind, the acceptance is determined first. Then and only then do they generate a number. Probably everyone who submits a FAFSA (and CSS if applicable) will have that information “downloaded” or “processed” so there is no way to tell from that whether you are accepted or not, unfortunately.
So if you’re deferred from EA then are you put into EDII…?sorry I just got a little confused.
@yac - no, you are defaulted into RD
Is is possible for EA to get rejected? Or just defer/accept?
I think the possibilities are accept, reject or defer. Good luck!
Yes they reject people EA
