Let’s dig into that a bit. Last year’s UChicago’s EA applicants were composed of:
Students that had UChicago as their first choice, and could afford to do ED if it was available.
Students that had UChicago as their first choice, but couldn't afford to commit to ED.
Students that had applied for ED elsewhere and for whom EA schools like UChicago and/or MIT were backup choices.
Students for whom UChicago was simply one choice among many.
With ED now available, the high yielding group 1 has disappeared, but the other groups remain the same. So this will drop EA yield, but Chicago’s yield has been naturally rising as it is. I expect it to be a wash.
@hebegebe this year’s early yield will be bumped up signficantly as some who would have been EA this year opted for ED . . . Totally on board with what you are saying though. UChicago very well knows how this works for EA’s. Even if they overshoot they can just scrimp a bit on the back-end with the RD’s. But guessing they have a great idea of how many of those EA’s are ED somewhere else and just haven’t reported in yet.
if you get deferred from uchicago and change Uchicago ea to ed would that show demonstrated interest? or at least increase your chances? Any response would be appreciated, thank you!!!
Yes, @allima, I believe it would. You also would not have to wait with the regular applicants for a decision. There was a discussion in this thread about a week or so ago when someone confirmed that EAs that were deferred could in fact change to EDII if they notified the admissions office. Wait to see if a button appears on your portal or other instructions arrive with any deferral. Up until then, keeping my fingers crossed for all concerned.
My oldest is a student at UChicago now, applied and accepted early. The vast majority of his friends also applied early and had UChicago as their top choice. Most of them would have done ED if it was an option. Outside of HYPSM, there can’t be many other schools as good at figuring out who really wants to be there and who really fits in.
If I was an adcom at UChicago now, I would be looking really hard at the ED applicants before I even thought about the EA folks. They want kids that are smart and driven. And they want kids that want to be there. The best way to telegraph that is to apply ED. And you can’t use the “it’s only for rich kids” argument because UChicago is no loans, meets need, and you can always drop an ED commitment if the money doesn’t work out.
Guessing the overall early acceptance rate will stay about the same but that the vast vast majority of EA candidates will get deferred and the vast majority of acceptances will be ED kids.
@cisobelm it’s a reference to a well-known game-show that might be before your time. Look up “Let’s Make a Deal” hosted by the iconic-and-eternal Monty Hall (95 years young at this point).
Would UChicago ED admit rate be higher than that of Penn? I don’t think too many people know that UChicago had ED this year, and since they like to fill the class early, admit rate might be higher than expected.
All the other colleges listed on the site have released their 2020 early acceptance stats, but UChicago hasn’t. And I have noticed this in the past too. UChicago does not publish as much information as most of its peers institutions do. Why would that be?
Possibly because the article @ccyen328 used for statistics was published on December 14, 1015, before the release of last year’s UChicago EA decisions.
