@kaipao; Thanks for the kind wishes and for joining/visiting the thread!
Hello, @porouscriminal, I guestimate decisions will release May 12th, 4: 00 PM CST. I managed to mislook your username during my attempt at giving a mass update; hence, this notification. I hope you are doing well!
@XXTR22; Thanks for the question! I am at peace with the quality of my application. I worry because I know there are some weaknesses with the application: my class schedule and extracurriculars are unusual, I could have better articulated myself in the essays, I almost doubled the word limit on the why UChicago essay. But I put a considerable amount of work into the application, and I’m generally happy with the result. The admit rate is low enough that I think it is unlikely my application will get me accepted, but it has a chance.
I did the video profile; in it, I talked about juggling and the principle of explosion. I recorded the video on my phone and edited the video with DaVinci Resolve.
@McFly3141592; In sheer honesty, your application sounds intriguing. What kind of extracurriculars do you have, and, how is your class schedule unusual?
As for the concern of overwriting, I recall UChicago feeling quite A-okay about any “Why UChicago” essays ranging between 250-500 words.
As stated in the FAQ of the College website:
“For the ‘Why UChicago?’ essay, we suggest about 250-500 words. The ideas in your writing matter more than the exact number of words you use!”
On another note, if you don’t mind, tell me a tad about how you incorporated the act of juggling and “the principle of explosion” in your Optional Video Profile. (As you can see, you’ve perked intrigue. This is a great sign! I feel admissions may feel the same way. ) You don’t have to go into great detail if you don’t prefer, regarding the matter. I won’t prod too much.
Moreover, I feel glad to hear you feel at ease with your application!
The checklists are gone now. There is a new message on our portal reading: “Thank you for checking on your application status! At this time, we have processed all of your application materials. Transfer applicants will be notified of their decisions in early May via email.”
@ivysky; Hello, welcome to the thread! Indeed, that message was uploaded.
I guestimate results should be released on May 12, 4:00 PM CST.
Thanks again for visiting/joining the thread!
my heart just freaked out… omg i have 12 more schools to go so we will see
BEST OF LUCK TO EVERYONE!
@heyigotnoclue; Thanks for the encouragement!
Out of curiosity: Have you received admissions decisions from any other colleges (other than the 13 applied to), or are you just beginning the waiting process? In other words, have the decisions from any other school you’ve applied to been released?
Also, 12 schools? That sounds like a lot of drive and ambition. Haha. Which application (to which school) do you think will be the best and bearing of the greatest result?
@XXATR22 - yup so i applied to all uc schools and one cal state, unc, bu and a few others. i already heard back from all the UC schools (accepted all and one waitlist for business school)
i think i am still. haunted from my experience with admissions from 2018 when i gradated from high school. i only applied to schools that i felt connected to because they are schools that i have either been to or my friends have been been to/attended
for uchicago, i think…errr i think my application was ok. it wasnt spectacular so i would be freaking out if i get in.
@heyigotnoclue; Wow! Accepted to all 9 UC schools? That sounds amazing! You must’ve done a lot of preparation, in regards to your applications and applicant profile.
If you were accepted by the University of Chicago, would you choose UChicago or one of the UCs?
(I just have so much curiosity, LOL!)
@XXATR22 - lol i got lucky - my gpa is not great so i got lucky for some of the schools and not all 9 - i applied to all except ucr, uc merced, and ucsc. everything else, yes.
preparation? not really - for u chicago, i ran out of time for one of the long abstract essays so its really bad. i read it back after and omg, i sound like i was about to word vomit.
i would choose uchicago - lol i love the cold…i desperately want to move and if u want to chat more, u can always message me
@heyigotnoclue; I just saw this reply!!!
I feel there is a lot more to admissions than stats. There’s personality, ambitions, passion, amongst much else (I say this not because you asked, but because I just love to go into detail. Haha). Moreover, in the review of your application, I feel admissions must have picked up on your welcoming personality and great potential. Those two factors alone are significant, and when paired alongside the other components of an application (e.g., the essays, supplementals, and, etc.) can arise favorable results. Therefore, although you mention a rushed supplemental essay, some aspects of you as an applicant are a given and can be deemed substantial (e.g., positive energy, great ambition, etc.) through the “Why This University” essay, the “Additional Information” section, the “Extracurriculars” description, Letters of Recommendation, and more.
Final: When it seems like an applicant has much to say in an essay, in my opinion, that can give off many impressions, one of which may be “This applicant looks to have much to add to a conversation, perhaps even in a debate; they have a great string of ideas, etc., etc.”
As long as you delivered, in one fashion or another, your potential, perspective, ambitions (amongst other givens that have shared your personality and ability to enhance the experience of self and others), and a capability to contribute to peers and The College throughout your application, I feel other aspects of your application can offset a potentially (to the applicant) uncertainty-inducing essay.
I support you in your strives for higher education.
Also, congratulations on the UCs acceptances!
my checklist just disappeared. hope that’s a good sign for us!!!
Hello, @lhammonx. Welcome to the transfer thread!
I anticipate admissions decisions to be released on May 12, 4:00 PM CST.
The disappearance of the portal checklist, indeed, seems to be a progression of the application review process in my eyes.
Thanks again for visiting/joining the thread!
@XXATR22 - heyy! thanks so much <3
@heyigotnoclue; No problem! I wish you the best possible outcome!
@XXATR22; My class schedule is unusual because there is not much variety in the classes I have taken. For example, last semester four of the classes I took were mathematics classes — the most challenging of which was a graduate-level course in complex analysis. I have only taken one non-STEM course at university. This has the potential to cast doubt on my ability to excel in UChicago’s Core. I tried to address this in my application, but I still think it could be concerning to the admissions staff. The upside is I do well in mathematics classes; I didn’t miss a point in the complex analysis course I took last semester.
My extracurricular are unusual because my main extracurriculars are MOOCs, self-study, and internships. (If you are interested, one of the MOOCs I completed was the MITx MicroMasters in statistics and data science. One of the self-study activities was studying real analysis using Rudin’s “Principles of Mathematical Analysis” and lectures from Scripps College and Harvey Mudd. Most of my internships are software developer positions.)
For my video profile, I wanted to include juggling since I’m alright at it and I did not include it anywhere else in my application. So, I started the video juggling 5-ball cascade and 3-ball continuous backcross. Then, I transitioned into the principle of explosion. The principle of explosion states that from a false premise anything will follow. For example, if we assume that 0 = 1 we can prove that 3 = 4. But, more interestingly, we could prove that the moon is made of cheese. (The easiest way to do this would be a proof by contradiction.) I gave a false proof the sqrt(2) is rational and then used this technique to make some corny proofs.
@McFly3141592; Honestly, I see a lot of positives that I think will really wow the admissions officers. For one, your course choices emphasize an indicative passion: Mathematics (which ties into your earlier mentioning of an intention at majoring in Mathematics)! Also, I feel your ambition is extravagant–i.e., an undergraduate taking graduate-level classes–particularly math, an apparent passion, is fantastic. This, I feel, says to admissions: “I love math, have gone above the expectations of an undergraduate degree, and it is a passion of mine.”
Moreover, your extracurriculars seem phenomenal. Self-discipline, I believe, is a strong indicator of college success. In my eyes, if someone can manage their motivations and path toward a common goal without needing someone to hold their hand every step of the way, that comes across as absolutely as fabulous. This shows not only an applicant’s ability to uphold autonomous practices but occupational success. Furthermore, MOOCs, self-study, and internships relating to your major (Mathematics) are positive indicators of substantial passion. Paired with your ability to go above and beyond, upkeep an autonomous practice in your studies, and present remarkable characteristics are very favorable. As these are strong factors when paired with (I would expect) great letters of recommendation and supplemental materials. Question(s): Have you sent in any supplemental material other than the Optional Video Profile (e.g., a Mathematics related abstract/research project)? Particularly a copy of one of the activities created via Rudin’s “Principles of Mathematical Analysis”?
Regarding your Optional Video Profile: It sounds awesome–intellectually stimulating, quirky, and very pleasant. I have never heard of the Principle of Explosion. Based on the manner in which you have described it (the concept), clear and concise, I can assume your essays were composed in a like fashion. If so, great job!
These aspects you have disclosed seem outstanding.
Also (out of curiosity), are mathematics courses a common trend in your course selections? Meaning, have you taken mainly mathematics, or have you taken programming courses as well? If so, approximately which of the two have you taken more of, mathematics or programming?
Oh god, I am so nervous about this. I know the transfer rate of admission is so low, but it would be super awesome to get in. I do have my outside/alternative options, but gosh I want to attend UChicago so bad. Between this and finals, I’m freaking out just a little bit - how’s everyone else holding up?
@zstar18; I’m doing great (in regard to waiting for admission decisions) but with a little anticipation; also a tad stressed by some current factors in my community college courses.
Once the semester for me ends, my current laxness to the wait for decisions will narrow mainly on said wait, I feel. Haha! Also, I do wish things would calm for you so you would have less nervousness; and I share a similar excitement of the chance of admission to UChicago with you!
Moreover, finals get under my skin, too!
I feel pleased to hear you have pinpointed some alternative/outside options. I feel every student should have a chance to thrive in a compelling, nourishing academic institution, regardless of admissions decision outcome.
You will thrive!
(I wish you admittance to the University of Chicago!!!)
