Northwestern - high match
USC - low match
Best of luck! Chance me back http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/1595874-chance-me-ucs.html</a></p>

Thanks guys! Do you think my explanation of my bad grades in my early high school career will help me at all (depression/caring for grandfather who acquired bone cancer)? I said I didn’t want my statement to be a sob story and I made it as succinct as possible.

Bumparooni.

Chicago will be hardest with its 8% acceptance rate. NW, JHU, Cornell, CMU are a bit easier with their 15ish% accept rates. You’re in at the rest.

Per the “The Choice” NYTimes website (<a href=“2013 College Acceptance Rates - Interactive Feature - NYTimes.com”>http://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2013/04/15/education/thechoice-2013-acceptance-rates.html/</a>), admit rates for fall 2013:

Stanford - 5.7%
UChicago - 8.8%
Northwestern - 14%
Cornell - 15%
JHU - 16.8%
USC - 20%
CMU - 28%
Georgia Tech - 39%

Vinceh, regarding my last post, what do you think?

What do I think of your last post? Bumparooni? Not much. ;)

As for your essay, I’m sure that it will help your cause for admissions people to know the circumstances around your GPA. You have a very good profile, schools that take a more holistic approach (basically all your schools except GT and maybe CMU) will take the time to consider your situation. Factor in your URM status and I think you have a good shot at many of your choices.

Chance threads are nearly worthless to begin with, but getting “advice” that ‘Stanford is a match’ or input that completely contradicts easily findable facts (admit rates & test score %-tiles), only proves that old saying that “free advice is worth twice what you pay for it”.

My take on your situation is, when schools reject over 90 out of 100 candidates (Stanford and Chicago), it’s just smart to think of them as lottery ticket Reaches. I suspect you’ll get into at least two out of NU, JHU, USC and Cornell and both CMU & GT. Good luck.

Chance me for Columbia, Brown, Uchicago, Caltech, Northwestern?

International student
4.0 GPA (according to a GPA translator)
Rank: top 3
SAT CR:720 Maths:740 Writing:720
SAT subject tests: Maths 2:760 Biology:680
lots of activities but no notable awards
Applying for financial aid

UChicago, Cornell, and JHU are reaches as they are for everyone, but you should be good for the others

Chance me! http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/1593643-chance-me-upenn-uva-chicago-michigan-usc.html</a></p>

@vinceh

Two is good enough for me, haha! I agree about chancing threads being useless. To be honest, it’s just for reassurance until actual decisions come out (for those of us with bad anxiety). Thanks, mayng.

bumparooni!

UChicago (EA) - reach
JHU - low reach
Cornell - low reach
CMU - high match
Georgia Tech - match
Stanford - high reach (high reach for everyone :frowning: )
Northwestern - high match
USC - high match

Your GPA and SAT Math is not as strong as other applicants, but you have great ECs! Work hard on your essay and you really got a good shot. :)

Chance me back please?
http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/1599511-chance-me-please-intl-student-will-chance-back.html</a></p>

Chanced you back. Does my ACT Math make up for my crappy SAT Math?

beep boop bump

Overall, you’re the same as me :). You have a great shot. Everything is good, besides the gpa. I have the same problem. I had personal issues my freshman year. What about you? Did anything happen to cause a 3.5 GPA?

Good to know there are other people in the same boat as me. My grandpa got bone cancer and I was pretty depressed throughout freshman year up until mid-sophomore year. I wrote about it in the additional information section of my common app.

Yeah I agree everything is good except your GPA… Can you inprove your scores?
That would help you alot.
UChicago: Low reach
JHU: Low reach
Cornell: High match
CMU: low reach
Georgia Tech: Safet
Stanford: Reach
Northwestern: match
USC: Match

Bump bump bump.

UChicago (EA) - Mid reach
JHU - Low reach
Cornell - Low reach
CMU - High match/low reach
Georgia Tech - Match
Stanford - High reach
Northwestern - Low reach
USC - Match
UMich - Match
UNCCH - OOS? Low/mid reach

If you have to report your rank as 16%, you are at a huge disadvantage. Colleges don’t want those #s to go down, and there are plenty of unranked applicants they can take.
