This summer I'm working as a Research Assistant at the Becker Friedman Institute for Research in Economics at The University of Chicago, attending the Allsup Summer Entrepreneurship Academy at Saint Louis University, and taking MATH 230-0 Differential Calculus of Multivariable Functions at Northwestern University. My top two schools for transferring into next year are Uchicago and Northwestern. I'll also be applying to schools such as Vanderbilt, Notre Dame, WashU, NYU, and the Ivys. What should I focus on during my freshman year at U of I Engineering to make this possible?

Oh and my rank was 20/611

Hey! I’m starting at northeastern in the fall, and although I’m going to try to keep an open mind, I really think I’d be happier at uchicago. I applied early action this year and was deferred, then waitlisted, then the waitlist closed after about a week. I think a lot of it had to do with the fact that I was coming from my high school’s second graduating class, so it wasn’t known at all (I was the first applicant ever from the school to uchicago).

I know it’s so far away, but I wish I was applying and waiting for a decision already! It’s very nice to know that someone is in the same boat. I can post my stats if you’re interested.

@guitarsmasher25: I wonder why you think the U of C is the right place for you? Could you say a bit more about that?

@Alex2234 yeah I’d love to check them out. And I just love the atmosphere at U of C- going down there everyday has made me realize it more. Asides from all that though, what do you think my application is lacking?

@guitarsmasher25 your credentials are great, and I’m sure you have confidence in them. One big thing that separates uchicago is their particular focus on essays-- you’re probably already aware of what their essay questions are like. My brother just graduated from uchi, and had basically the same credentials as you when he applied (scored 5 on 8 AP tests, merit scholar, NHS, SHS, 2270 on SATS with 800 in math, etc.) and applied to Yale, Stanford, Cornell, Columbia, and UChicago. The only school he was accepted to was UChicago, and it had to do with the uniqueness of his essay. They encourage you to take risks, and I think that’s what makes people stand out, especially with the acceptance rate dropping to 8% this year.

But I’m not an admissions counselor or anything, so don’t trust everything I say.

Wait, do colleges see AP scores? Don’t they only see them if you send them in (and that’s usually what you do after you send in your deposit or whatever stating that you will matriculate)?

Do you know how important demographics are when transferring? Students across my entire school district got back harsh decisions from all these Midwest Ivy League schools this year in the regular decision pool. Me being an Indian (Asian) male from a public school in suburban Illinois (even though it is one of the better public schools) probably didn’t help. Anyone who wanted to get into their school of choice this year got in early decision. And I have to say, most had similar if not better credentials.

@siggyfreud senior year APs yes. Otherwise I think you can enter in AP scores from previous years on your common app and then send them in once you matriculate.

Thanks for the info, guitarsmasher25! Good luck on trying to transfer! By the way, how did you get the research internship at UofC? That sounds like so much fun.

I just emailed the head professor of the Econ department for a research opportunity. And thanks!

^how did you get it???

I’m an incoming student this fall (class of 17) and I tried to email a couple of Booth professors about RA positions in the fall, and none of them had anything available.

Guys, when apply here, do not mention anything academic. From friends I know working in the admissions, those student who always talk about grade are almost entirely rejected. Those students who talk about “second” life, many of them are accepted even without top GPA. My advice: be relaxed and let them know of your passion other than grades.

@uofcpride okay thanks that actually helps a lot. And @chigoogle I emailed the professor in like March/April so they might have run out of spots
