UChicago Transfer Applicants 2013!

Fellow UChicago transfer applicants, I know you're out there! I've been a long-time lurker here on College Confidential and finally joined to find some community in this stressful and emotionally draining process. Since applying to college AGAIN in certainly isolating, let's get to know each other!

Where are you from? What are you looking for? In the spirit of intellectual discussion and growth, let's keep "chancing" and stats elsewhere; evoking competition only propagates anxiety in this inherently stressful time. The purpose of convening here is to answer questions and provide support.

So, let us share our hopes, dreams, anticipation, and, sadly, indignation in response to the recent dramatic decline in transfer acceptance rate.

I guess I'll begin. I am a classical singer and went to private conservatory that was sharply focused on performance. While I was at school, I became interested in how the development of western tonality parallels the emotion behind psychosocial phenomena. My interests developed rather quickly, so I took some time off to explore. Harmony led to psychology, psychology led to cognition, cognition led to neuroscience, neuroscience led to the biochemical and molecular underpinnings of psychiatric disorders, and that led me to realize how relevant everything is to understanding myself and my place in the world. (It certainly wasn't that linear, but you get the idea).

That's me. How about you?

Hey Passaggio,
In the same boat as you. Dying to go to the U of C. Also from New York. Have a passion for the Middle East. One day, I hope to work there. After college, I am headed to the Israeli Army.
Spent my fall semester at Emory University. Great school, just not right for me. Started studying Arabic and Russian there and have fallen in love with these languages. Russian department is being cut, so that is not good for me. Spending my spring semester at Tel Aviv University where I will study Arabic, Russian, and Middle Eastern Studies and maintain my Hebrew. U of C was my first choice last year and was wait listed. Hoping for a different result this year.
Where are you coming from? What do you like most about the U of C?

Hey! I was wondering if there was a transfer thread and BAM! Here it is!

I’m also hoping to go to Uchic. I want to do research on sleep disorders in kids. I love kids and sleep is super important for development. Currently work at a school and love it!

I was going to apply to Chicago last year, but missed the deadline. Also messed up on FAFSA. Re-applying to a couple of places and if I don’t get in anywhere, I might go travel the world instead or start up a business (or both).

Can’t stand being at my school anymore. No one wants to actually learn like I do. Boring, boring, boring.

Hey guys,
Great to realize that we r in the same boat! Have u guys received ur UChicago application account yet?? I haven’t :(

@babygoindown I didn’t get a notification, but when I tried to log in, I just clicked “forgot password” and entered my email address and apparently I had one. It let me reset the password and see all of my materials.

@smewshie, are u able to check the status of your materials such as the college official’s report and recs?? mine only shows that i have submitted Commonapp and the supplement, and there is a note that says “The documents shown here are only those that you have personally submitted, not materials sent on your behalf. We will open up full credential checking abilities later in the month”

Same here, and hey fellow UChic applicants!

I am in China and applying U of C!!!

Hi everyone!

What universities are you coming from?
I’m transferring out of Boston University.

I feel bad for starting this thread and disappearing! I’m coming from the New England Conservatory of Music.

How is everyone dealing with the wait? The reality that there is such limited space and a long waiting list for first-years? This is a stressful time, indeed.

Also, @smewshie, that sounds incredibly interesting! What made you get into sleep disorders? I’ve been working primarily with animal models for adult psychiatric disorders, but there are some people in the lab where I work who work with infants and focus on sleep disorders and I’ve always wanted to know more!

@babygoindown no, you probably won’t be able to. I’d assume that they got everything unless they contact you by email or whatnot and tell you otherwise.

@Passaggio it’s a long story, but to summarize…
-Seen family members struggle, while I always took sleep for granted.
-High school grades weren’t as good as they could have been, but I got super creative and would read A LOT.
-Developed some theories on causes/treatments of certain sleep disorders, which I want to test out through research. It’s so weird… I’ll be reading about something and will wonder if it’s connected to something else like a sleep disorder (it probably is, the whole world seems to be so interconnected).
-I work with kids. Sleep is important to development. If sleep disorders are treated at a young age, I feel like that could be revolutionary. Improved memory, better functioning, less of certain mental illness, better critical thinking skills, etc etc.

And regarding the wait, I have two jobs and skewl so I forget about it until I go on here and remember again :open_mouth: LUL

I’m trying to leave Northeastern!

I just logged into my UChicago account using the username and password from last year when I applied as a high school senior, and I was able to check my application status (whether they received those materials that I mailed out). However, they still did not email me about portal login information. Does anyone have the same problem? Is this something to concern about??

I’m in the same situation ^ I’ve been meaning to call them about this to see what’s going on because I have not received any e-mails from them regarding my app…

make sure uchicago is the place you want to be at

Like honestly, talk to current students, soo how friendly people really are or are they faking it And i never thought id say this, but Chicago is nrvewreaking. Ive been so depressed and this is just my first year

Hooks: “Glowing” recommendation from Chicago Alum, Pacific Islander, Gay (if that even is a hook), Great essays.

Goal: MD/PhD

Though Chicago is the best fit for me, if I get into Columbia/Stanford/Yale (I won’t, I’m aware), I’ll go to one of those… Also applied to: JHU, WashU, Cornell, UPenn, Brown, Rice, Vandy, Northwestern, Amherst, Williams, Swarthmore, Pomona, Haverford

^^of all the schools you have listed on the “transfer list” unfortunately Chicago will be the most difficult to get into with their transfer acceptance rate around 2%. Only Harvard has a lower rate. I hope you have a unique outstanding personal story to tell to “move” the admissions committee…or else you have little chance. Good luck.

wow! everyone here seems to have such interesting passions!

I’m class of 2015, coming out of Orange Coast College (its a community college in Cali) as a Philosophy/Biophysics major. I want to study in their HIPS program for science/philosophy history.

When does uchicago usually release its decisions? i’ve been looking around and have only seen some mixed answers. I’m hoping that I’ll know my uchicago decision before i have to SIR to one of the uc’s :P
