UChicago vs Tufts vs Vanderbilt vs Emory

I’ve done my research but I’m getting very conflicting responses from people I know that go to these schools and stuff on the internet.

I’m going to be a pre med and the goal is medical school, but I do realize that that is far from a given. Which of these schools puts students in the best place to be accepted to med school? Does Uchicagos grade deflation make it harder?

Also, I’m going to major in Econ. I know that Uchicago has the best program, but who’s number 2?

I want to go to a school where people cheer for the sports teams and go to the games. But I also don’t want a heavy greek presence. Is it possible for these to be mutually exclusive?

Thanks you everyone for your help!

Are you going to be able to get into all 4 of these schools? Why not apply to all 4, see where you get in and worry about choosing at that point - if you even have a choice. All of these are long shots eve pa for top students.

Thank you for your input! I’m just trying to get a better sense of each school! I’m going to apply to all of them. I thought I would ED2 to one of them, but clearly I can’t make a choice so I don’t want to commit.

Vanderbilt is probably #2 for economics among the schools on your list.

Only Vanderbilt plays big time sports among these 4, but attendance at Vanderbilt games has been considered a problem for years.

It is certainly possible to find schools where fans turn out to cheer for sports AND there is not a heavy Greek presence.

Rice!!

I mean it’s almost like Vandy football wise but it has the residential system, it’s elite and strong in Econ.

Duke and Northwestern but with a bit more Greek life.

I am pivoting from your list because it misses the sports attendance angle although all are fine schools.

So you will major in Econ but take pre-med classes?

Are these schools affordable because if you are full pay it’s going to cost too much with med school and you’ll have better options financially?

All these would meet your goals better than your list of four. Vandy is most similar but is much heavier Greek.

Did you apply ED1…if so where?

Do you have a chance me so we can maybe guide you better ??

I was deferred ED1 from Rice actually so that was my top choice.

I don’t have a chance me, but I can give a rough breakdown

91/100 GPA
7 AP + 5 Honors
36 ACT

As for extracurriculars:

Captain of soccer team, editor of online newspaper, I run a tutoring service for underserved kids, I act in my schools theater productions.

Is there anything more that could help? I really appreciate your help!

My mom went to Grad school at Tufts, I don’t really know if that adds much at this point.

With a 36 ACT - you might go Vandy.

How does your 91 compute on a 4 point scale?

To me, it’s most similar to Rice in the sports angle - but Vandy is heavy greek. Rice is no greek.

Have you considered Northwestern? Just looking at your desires. Another one to consider actually - William and Mary - might be an even better fit for you with better odds.

If you were going to ED, Vany likes the high tests. Emory will be easier to get into. Emory = less ports but less Greek and you can double your odds applying to Oxford - if you were interested in starting at a smaller campus. That will bring extreme quiet and a smaller friend group you carry to the big campus in two years. However, our tour guide told us they don’t do a good job assimilating with the main student body. Or if Oxford isn’t for you, then don’t check that box. My daughter didn’t…only interested in the main campus.

How about, if you’re not sold on any, do not ED. You don’t have to D. Are you sure you can afford these - the group you mentioned, not the group I mentioned.

Do you have safeties - like a Denver, Elon, SMU, Wake or Richmond - or stepping up a tad a Rochester or Case Western but those likely are matches, not safeties.

I just got into Case, so I guess that’s my safety now?

Do you think Emory would be a better pre med school than Vandy? How does the Greek life compare?

I am not really sure if it is grade deflation or that UChicago is just hard. The 9 week quarters are fast. In that 9 weeks, you will cover as much or more material than at a lot of schools in a 16 week quarter. Also, the core requirements are not a joke.

At many elite schools, Econ can be a relatively easy major if you want. Not so much at UChicago. The newer Business Econ is MUCH easier. People do get into GPA sensitive professional programs (Law, Med) with a Econ major, but it will be a lot of work and stressful.

That isn’t UChicago. The football “stadium” is smaller than many high schools.

Vandy far more Greek.

You may talk to each school and ask for stats. I imagine both are great.

You know what’s great?

Case Western.

You should be celebrating…seems like you are downplaying the significance of Case. It’s a top top school and likely fits you better than Vandy. Hopefully you get merit !!

That is AWESOME!!

Have you considered how much undergrad and med school will cost. $600, 700k.

Are you sure you shouldn’t find a much cheaper undergrad ?

Most doctors don’t make crazy bank today…some still do…and being weighed down by years and years of debt is not smart. There are schools out there where you can go for $20-40k a year.

Congrats on Case. That’s a Huuuuuuggggeeeee get. Don’t downplay it at all.

And Chicago is where fun comes to die

That’s the best college reputation ever !!

Btw. Deferred does not mean rejected. I don’t know about Rice but UGA and Miami both take a ton of deferred. My daughter got into Miami RD after EA deferral. If you read the board so did so many.

If Rice is truly your dream and you ED elsewhere and get in then Rice can’t happen.

I’m not sure why kids feel the need to use the ED1 and 2 slots. Yea, you get better odds but it’s for the school’s benefit.

It’s my belief it’s a scam. I did not let my kids do either. One was WL at WUSTL and did not get in. Turns out after second thought he didn’t want to go anyway. The other WL at Emory and declined the spot. They took none anyway.

She got into W&L RD just like you got into CWRU.

Rice isn’t over. But it is of you RD and get in.

Thanks you all! I got a good amount of merit at Case, I think like 25k a year! So I am definitely happy about that.

To me, pre-med at CWRU minus $25K beats any other school on your list at full pay (not to say you won’t get a merit at Vandy if you did their merit app…or Rice, etc.).

There’s very little “pedigree” difference between Case and the level higher - and btw - med school wont’ care because they’ll care about your GPA and MCATs and other medically related activities that are easier to happen at CWRU

It’s why you’ll see a just throwing out a school - Boise State or UTK at a Vandy med school, etc.

CWRU is phenomenal in the medical sciences with ample local medical opportunities right there!!

Anyway - be pumped about Case. I hope you get into your dreams (although I hope you spend less because med school costs a ton and talk to your folks).

But Case is phenomenal - and it just seemed like you downplayed it. But - it’s hard to tell context on a web page
