UCI Arrests/Expels Students who Shout Down Invited Speaker

YouTube - Uncivilized Tactics at UC Irvine (Rough Cut)

How is that an example of UCI not allowing free speech? It appears that a Q&A period was to take place after the speech. Had those students acted in a civilized manner they would have had the opportunity to partake in a dialogue rather than cause trouble.

Agree with Wingspan, these hecklers were interrupting the Ambassador in the most offensive way.

Lakerforever24, are you saying they are justified in doing this under “free speech”? If so, that’s absolutely hogwash. Their interruptions severely infringed on public discourse. Especially in such a formal university setting.

I request that you change the inappropriate title of this thread.

those students are idiots, they actually think they’re making some kind of point by proving they have no idea how to cunduct themselves in a civilized manner. bravo fools.

Wow, that’s unbelievable. Those students were completely out of line.

Why do left-wingers always have to resort to these type of tactics? I saw another video of violence erupting while Tom Tancredo was speaking at UNC. This type of behavior from these anti-intellectual, troglodytes should result in immediate expulsion.

Based on what the others said without actually having watched the video myself, I agree! lol

@chistian612 Your calling devout muslims “left-wingers”? did you take american gov in high school? here’s a better question: why are fools like you so quick to blame everthing on the left as if the far right doest use the same kind of tactics?

More left wing thugocracy in action. @ around 2:20 someone throws a brick through a window.

CBBolts, find me a video of college republicans heckling an invited guest speaker.

^ yeah and the far right bombs abortion clinics…what’s your point?

i was talking about Michael Oren not being able to speak bc of those idiots at UCI

Hows this: [YouTube - Heckler At Obama Speech to Congress: ‘You Lie!’](http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TyTelRaoBAI)

haha i laugh at you and your typical “holier than thou” conservatism

pwned. btw i dont think democrats are better people than republicans or vis versa, it just annoys me when people try to pull the “where just more (insert whatever) and they’re not.” we’re all the same and the idiots in our groups will always do stupid stuff but when it comes down to it we all see the facts and draw different conclusions. that’s what divides us.

I’m sorry I’m for the choice for women to choose what to do with their bodies (which will definitely help more in preventing abortions than outright banning it), allowing gays to openly serve in the military, not being bombarded by religion in public schools, and allowing gays to marry. Do you know how sickening it is to see politicians today? All you need to do is blend in the status-quo and you’re pretty much in a running for public office. It has nothing to do with solving problems for the majority- its the “image” that matters the most. If you have that, people somehow think you’re more qualified- although you’re probably not at all.

On that note, the ambassador definitely deserved more respect. He’s the ambassador for Pete’s sake. Blame the hormones and too much beer.

Lakersforever is obviously referring to the students disrupting the ambassador.

@christian612: As I recall, a certain Republican Congressmen interrupted the PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES during his health-care speech. Please take your political bias out of this – its just ignorant.

Technically you don’t have unlimited free speech at UCI or any university. There was a documentary i saw once about these rules and how they are enforced with a bias. The student conduct books do limit your speech. One example is: if someone makes a comment in class that you may think is a dumb comment, and you start laughing at the person or say something sarcastic or condescending you are in violation of the student conduct code. Many other examples can be found pertaining to respectful discourse at school functions.

Oh my God! That’s the coolest story I’ve ever heard in my life! Can you tell it again, do you have time?

^^ of course. These are just unwritten rules the university puts in writing so students like the one’s in this video, who clearly were not raised with these common standards of decency, can be punished. There is a certain way we conduct ourselves in a free and civilized society that some people just don’t seem to understand.

My apology Laker, I suppose I was confused by the title of the thread.

I really can’t imagine how little patience I would have with those kids on campus but, if I said anything god forbid in some defense of Israel (I’m Israeli) I would be demonized as some zionist pig or some other nonsense. Mind you, in the western world I’m a bleeding heart liberal. Point being, Religious groups with a political agenda are always insane.

^ Funny, you began your post by pointing out the prejudice that exists against you and then ended it with a prejudice comment. Not all religious groups with a political agenda are insane. I hope you can realize that thinking so makes you just as prejudice as those who would persecute you for being Israeli friend.
