to pre-meds:
if you could choose btw UCI/UCSD (hard to get good GPA) and UCR (easier to get good GPA) which one would it be? If med schools don't place much (if any) weight on the undergrad institution or the major should i just not go to UCR and have less stress and a better GPA. I know one plus to going to a harder university is getting better training for the MCAT, but are there any other pluses?

"It still all comes down to WHAT u do at the school guys...my sister is at UCI med and there are people from colleges such as Harvard and Yale to Cal-State Northridge. Go figure"

"uci 2009...you are clueless. Now go to the library and study."

usitthegap,, first i agree with you that it depends on personal effort.. and im not saying that there is no way to get into A med school from irvine...

as for the first comment,, think about it logically, if ur a Harvard or Yale undergrad would you make UCI as one of the top choices for Med school, when there are alot better med schools out there?? and of course there are Hardvard people in irvine, and UCI undergrad in Harvard, but can you draw any conclusion from those true yet extremely biased facts?

as for the second comment, i do study.... for Med School.

alicantekid--

yea thats what i meant. I pointed out that it doesn't matter with undergrad program and then implied the David Geffen for grad

micheeatsfish: you liar you're not in Los Angeles. You're in South Pasadena with me.

I'm sorry, but growing up with parents who've risen to the top from mediocre schools, it just doesn't seem worth it to throw down the extra 30 grand a year when I have UCI CHP beckoning me...

My advice is to go to an undergrad school that is a good fit and makes financial sense, but still allows you to achieve your goals. UCI (especially being in CHP) allows you to do that. Blow your money on grad school, since the name of the school only really matters for your final degree.

For med, not even the name of the grad school matters that much. If say you went to johns hopkins for med school and graduated with a low gpa, you still wouldn't be able to get into a good internship. Though for business its probably different.

what is CHP ?

I'm going to UCI for premed...is it going to be like...unbelievably hard to get a good GPA and get into a good medical school?

It depends on how hard you are willing to work. It's doable. Basically, I think the curve works. The people who should be getting into medical school will be at the top, and the people who shouldn't won't be at the top of the curve. Funny how that works.
